Easy way to remove VW Hose Clamps?

Might be a simple question, but is there an easy way to remove the hose clamps that VW puts on the car when it is built? I am sick of spending 10 minutes per clamp with a pair of pliers, twisting and torqueing until I break it. I figure somewhere, somehow there has to be a magic way to get them open (without a special VW tool, of course).

I have spent the last several weekends working on the airbox, changing the fuel filter etc, and am sick of these clips.

I've been able to lift the end of the overlapping section with a small-bladed screwdriver - pops right apart. I didn't see this mentioned in the linked article. Assumes access at the proper angle of course. I've also cut them off with ***** (sp?), but that's a b!tch.
