Driver side mirror fell off

I was driving on the freeway yesterday and noticed that my mirror was not adjusted correctly, but looking closer it was coming away from the plastic. So a minute later I hear a thud and look in my rear view mirror and see my mirror shatter in a thousand pieces. Called the dealer and asked if they had in stock and they did, for $65.00. I said, are you sure that is not the entire mirror assembly, we are talking about a piece of 1/8 inch glass here. He said yeah, $65.00, the entire assembly is over $300.00. I said that is a ridiculous price for a piece of glass the size of my palm. He said they are heated and then hung up on me. Haha. I did not even know I had heated mirrors, but I fail to see why that would have anything to do with the glass as that was just glued on to the plastic piece. I will cut my own glass before I pay $65.00. Are their any other options to get it more reasonable other than going to a scrap yard? Has anyone ordered glass mirror through some legitimate place before?

Well if you want cheap, the junkyard is a good idea. Another is to go to a auto glass shop, have them trace the outline of the mirror backing plate and cut you a new mirror to that shape. Then you glue it on with silicone bathtub caulking.

As you said, it's just a piece of glass. You can find one at a scrap yard (just unsnap the entire mirror assembly and disconnect the 2 heating wires) or you might be able to find the glass on someplace like eb*y and then just glue it back onto the heater backing with silicone. I've used replacement glass for a B4 before and it was just fine.

The part # is 3B1 857 521 A or 3B1857521A for the Left / drivers side. You can google it both ways and get different suppliers. OE VW part $43. from online dealers. Or, and aftermarket for $29.
But Dealer List is only $56. so your dealer is really marking parts up!

driver's mirror

I just picked up the driver's mirror glass from Auto Parts Galaxy for $18 w/shipping. Item#4460. The only thing I noticed was a slight distortion but that could be from the way I pressed it overnight. Looks fine otherwise. Good luck.

The adhesive for driver's RV mirror must have a 15 1/2 year life span. Since I almost never use mirror defrost, I just used four small pieces of that red 3M emblem tape (double sided) to reapply the glass...fully functional adjustment once again.
