I would recomment the truck. As stupid and as unexcessable as it sounds. You will want to get outta your car as fast as possible if it ever does catch on fire. And the only place that is directly out of your car and easy storage is your trunk. Although there are many other places that make sense, but they wouldn't look right.

Please don't mount it on any pillars. I'll be here to say "I told you so" when your child gets bashed in the head with a 5 lb. extinguisher.

The #1 rule is it should be within reaching distance of the driver's seat...so...make your choices from that.

Stay away from the pillars, specially if you have a 2001 and up (these models have side-curtain airbags).

It is common to have fire extinguisher in the car outside the US. At least it is the norm in South America and most of Europe.
I've seen some nice mounting brackets right in front of the driver's seat, close to where the seat adjuster lever is.

Best case though would be to install a big one in the trunk, and pipe it through the car to under the dash, engine compartment and other fire-prone places.
Then install a FIRE botton or lever to have the thing work while you run away.

Even better... hook it up to a Alien window remote!

Under your legs on the floorboard doesn't sound like a bad idea, or maybe under the glovebox, if there's room(i can't remember)

If I had a reocurring nightmare in my burning :b5: , then I would have a small one in the cabin and a big mutha in the trunk

intreging idea but two faults

1) it would have to theoritcly need to be pointed in a few diffrent places
( from what ive seen of car fires they need to move the nozel around a little )

2) if i needed to use it on say some one else car or some one else

advantages i could see however are that if you can keep the hood closed youll be letting less air into the engine compartmenet and that should help

Mine is in the right side rear compartment where the first aid kit would go.
There's plenty of room for the extinguisher, a compact umbrella, a can of sap remover, 2 FRS radios and the owner's manual.

Ya gotta luv the Variant!

just get an automatic extinguisher and mount in the engine compartment. puts the fire out before you can react.

I just thought about it and it's odd that the cars sold in the US don't come with fire extinguishers. In some other countries they do come with them . I know when I lived in Mexico I bought a Jetta and it came with one in the trunk as well as a Cavalier I had for 2 months. You'd never want to need it but in case it's always handy to keep it in the trunk.
