As many of us know, VE's dont come w footwell lighting and B6's dont keep the light on like the T-reg's... so I did something a little custom. I had Blue footwell lighting on my MKIV and decided the B6 should have red (classier). I bought the LEDs and hooked it up last night (30 min tops to install, wire, and hide everything out of sight).

Features:
LED matches 100% oem lighting
LED's dim w the instrument panel.
No wires to be seen.
LED strip is so thin you need to look from underneath to find out where the light is coming from... enough w talk. Here are pics:

Ps1: Excuse the dUrty Interior... i've been busy

------- DO IT YOURSELF ----

Things you'll need *get it all before you start)

- Metal coat hanger (to feed the wiring w/o having to disasemble the whole console)
- Wire cutter (scisors?)
- Electrical tape
- Wire taps (2 is enough) or splicers
Image

- T20 Torx bit
- LEDs, or 12v accessory you may want to use on your car like: LavaLamp
- 20 min of your time.

here we go, pictures were supposed to be clickable (im trying to save bandwith!!) but they came out big and im tired enough so I wont re-code them

1. Open the ashtray lid. Remove ashtray.

2. Unscrew the exposed TWO T20 screws.

3. To lift the ashtray-tray (funny name i named it) you'll need to pry it out of the bottom of the shifter trim (unless you want to remove the shifter trim, but i didnt want and didnt know) how so I left it there and inserted a flat head screwdriver into the little hole you'll see on the bottom corner and pried it up/out towards me.

4. Lift the ashtray. Remove the connector from behind the cig. lighter/light.
You'll see a connector w 3 wires going to it:
RED: Constant power: you DO NOT want that.
Brown: Ground... we need that one.
Gray (your's may be a diff color, so w/e is different than red/brown you'll use for power!) : Our source of power (dimable).
Image

on this picture you'll see where I already had the two wires comming up , dont get ahead, its just a to show where the wires will be fed through so you can get power.

5. un-do your metal coat hanger... (hide it from the wifey after ur done w it!) and insert it throught the visible holes AIMING towards the outside of the car.. the metal will hit the plastic covers and go down towards the footwell area... just grab it with your hand when its visible, if you cant see stick ur hands up through the side and try to feel for it. Once you have it pull it down more and tie the wires for the LED'string and pull the wires up through the hole you inserted the metal hanger from and keep it there, do the same for the other side. tie them to the shifter and go hide the wires.

6. hide the wires!!

7. Pull the excess wire lenght up and cut it so you'll have enough to play with, but not too much. Splice the wires. group positive w positve and negative w negative (look for a white strip, group those together they are usually power.) Test to see if it works (polarity) by touching the wires onto the respective color wires on the connector, trun the headlight switch on and they should go on. if the dont: reverse plarity and try again.

8. Using the wire taps (or splicers), tap into the gray for power and the brown for ground. (I used splicers)

9. Test again.

10. Now reinstall the ashtray-tray (I wont get tired of saying that). And before screwing the T20s back in, make sure the lit closes. I had to push down on my ashtray-tray to make it close, then i tighthened it so it works perfect, if your's dont close/open right, just re-adjust.

11. Wire me some $$.. my fingers hurt from typing and I invented another word: Ashtray-tray. :D

*** IM ME IF YOU THING YOU NEED HELP... I JUST READ EVERYTHING AND IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME ***

(jk it does make sense to me... i was just trying to make you feel better b.c u didnt understand. ;) )

I bought the LED strip of a contact I had, I still have one pair That I could sell.. you can find them easy on ebay. I believe there are 15 LED's. You can break the strip at every thrre leds if you want less light intensity. or put a piece of electrical tape over some of the leds if its too bright for ur taste (I dimmed mine throught the dash lights dimmer switch but I'll cover some leds, maybe 3 or 4, to dim them down a bit)

Hey

Hey great write up, I just did this mod on my B5.5 wires and everything were the same. I just used 4 white LED's i got from streetglow.com. I wired it to my cigarette lighter and it looks awesome. I have two Led's up front (passenger/driver footwell) and two Led's under the back of the rear seats so it lights up the rear footwell as well, like the A4.. It's not bright at all and there is a nice glow around your feet. classy

Thanks again..

Source and Question!

If you are looking for LED strips check out www.superbrightleds.com

They have every kind of LED you could possibly want!!! I've ordered from them multiple times and they are very quick with delivery!

I would like mine to come on when the doors open, and off when they close, but I would also like to keep the ability to switch them on with the doors closed as well...

As I am not an electrical guy...anyone have any suggestions as to how to do that??
