Consider chipping the ECU, some questions to ask

Hello everyone,
I have a 2000 Passat ATW and looking to chip the ECU for some more power.
But there is something i would like to ask before making the decision:

1/ Is chipping mean re-program my current ECU in the car? Does anything else needed to be done?

2/ How would Chipped ECU effect gas mileage? Like 5% or 10% less efficient? My mileage is not good ( I only can run about 450Km for a full tank:( )

3/ What company is the best for a 2000 TIP in term of performance and mileage efficient? roughly how much would it cost? new? used?

4/ What else should i look out when chipping ECU?

Thank guys, any input would be greatly appreciated.

1) yes, and you will need an upgraded DV
2)chipped ecu can get you a little better milage.. but once your chipped your milage will drop like crazy because your foot will become heavier
3)apr, giac, bunch of others... its like $400-500 new. most people choose the company closest to them.
4)get a boost gauge and maybe vacuum lines

Hey there Son1C, I also have a 2000 ATW, 1.8T. I've got the APR chip in mine and love it. It's the best bang for the buck. I've had it for 6 years now with no problems what so ever. I bought it from someone here with the ECU included. He wrecked his Passat and didn't need his ECU.

Anyways...another good chip would be GIAC. yeah APR and GIAC are the most aggressive chips out there for the Passat. If you do get a chip with the ECU, just make sure the ECU numbers match and you'll be good to go;)

Just so you've got it - your ECU will be modified by the chip mfr's 'chip', then the new chip isloaded with their new engine mapping. With most of them, for your engine, you will go from a mfr's rated 150hp to about 200 - so a gain of 50. You'll get more if you put a bigger exhaust, et al. With a GIAC, you can more easily upgrade to a K04, if you think you might do that. With both, you can get options to have multiple programs (e.g., for pump gas, race gas, valet, and stock). For your car, it's not just reloading the VW ECU, it is a mod to the existing one. And with APR, the program is keyed to your ECU, so you can't load it onto others, or put another APR ECU in your car and load your original APR program. I'm not sure if GIAC keys their programs to a specific ECU. Most local shops who are mfr authorized to mod the ECU and load programs do a good job, although if you have APR or GIAC do it, you'll have to send your ECU in to have the mod done, and won't be able to drive your car until you get it back & reinstall it. Your nearest site can be loacated by looking at their homesites and looking up their listed dealers.

Wow,

that is alot of helpful information.

some more questions though:

1/ Why dont VW or manufacturer of the Car implement this program (mod) to the car so they can have more HP, more fuel economy?

2/ Is it because there is some damage to the car?

3/ What DV would you recommand?

Thanks

as for your first question of 1) No, chipping is not the reporgramming of your ECU.
inside of your ecu resides an AMD branded EPROM chip. i forgot what the E & P stand for, but ROM stands for read only memory. think of it as the operating system, basically. what chipping is, is actually the removal of said chip, and replacement with whatever brand of aftermarket is in question.

as for your #3, the popular consensus is that theyre all good, but theyre spread apart pretty well. people usually stick to what they can get installed locally. here in plano we have auto-scope which does only the giac (i believe), so we see more of those, usually.

1) because it would cost more, for programming, testing, and tuning.
2) it requires upgraded parts that vw doesn't want to pay extra for.

Alright..instead of making a WHOLE new thread..i'll just add to this one..

I am looking at the ECS tuning.
what the difference between 1 program, 2 program, 3 program, 4 program?
Besides the ECU tuning..how much and what else would i need to get?

Sorry for being clueless about this..and maybe not realizing that it has been answered.

Thanks.
