Components vs. Coaxials in rear

I am always hearing about people changing out their speakers with components in the front and coaxials in the rear. Why aren't people putting components in the rear? I guess that is my only real question. Why coaxials and not components?

it depends on personal tase. I personally like rear componets because I dont go all the time blaring my subwoofer at max. I like to actually turn it off and listen to the kicks etc.

Simple, especially in Passats the placement of the speakers is completely hindered by the passenger and driver side seat it makes more sense to drop money on the front speakers where they are more audible for every person in the car.

I've got Alpine Type-X comps up front running off a Linear Power 2.2HV (2x120) and the rear doors are Morel Integra 6s, but I have the internal amp on my HU turned off, so they aren't used. With just my front components because of them having an amp on them the rears are almost in audible, so I just leave them off since if I can't hear them there is no reason to have them on.

But, since I assume you won't be able to do that, unless you think you can run comps off your HU (bad idea), it's more cost effective to buy coax's for the rears. I'd actually leave them stock if I were you.

i dont ever hear my rear speakers. i often wonder if my rear tweets are on. so why bother putting in any. i however have comps all the way round but thats because thats what i do. i like the people in the back to enjoy the smooth sounds of b5 as much as i do up front. you could always go buy some 6.5's and add tweeters if you want.. i had 4 sets of 2 way coax iin my last car. no sep tweets at all and it still rocked.

I put Components in the rear of my car for the benefit of my kids. Seeing how I rarely get to play music of my choosing during a family road trip it is nice to have the speakers back there. That combined with the Fader control makes for a pleasurable journey for all involved.

That is the one thing I don't get about the recommendation to not put any speakers in the rear for passats. I totally understand how it kills the staging of the sound for the audiophile crowd, but what about your passengers?

Why is running components off of the head a bad idea? Insufficient power?

Correct, no HU can produce more than a TRUE 10-15 watts. Coaxs are a perfect choice for that ammount of power, but for components it's really pointless to run them unless you have about 50+ watts per channel, and the more you have on tap the better.

Will components driven by the head sound worse than coaxs, or is it just that you're not taking advantage of their capabilities?

Not that they'll sound worse, but more than likely you'll have to crank the volume to compensate for the lack of power, which in turn usually leads to distortion, so yes they can sound worse if that's what you end up doing.
