Clairfy Wastegate Actuator Failure...

First off, I've left bimmerforums as I am now the owner of a 1999 1.8t Passat.

When purchasing the Passat I had a prepurchase inspection done. The only thing that was cause for concern was a rattle that the mechanic said was coming from the cat. The rattle occurs in neutral and all gears, it is slightly noticeable in neutral when the rpm's rise quickly but is much more noticeable on decel.

I believed the cat explanation as I've had the problem with another car, but after reading the wastegate actuator failure symptoms I'm starting to wonder if that's possibly the case. I've noticed in my searches that everybody only mentions the rattle on decel, does that mean my rattle on accel would eliminate the actuator from the equation? Hoping so. Sorry for another wastegate thread, but didn't want to bring an ancient one back. Posted this in the newbie forum because it should be expected from a newbie. Thanks

Welcome, and no problem. That's why we have a newbie forum. Although I've never done this, I've been told that you can actually try to move the wastegate manually, and if there is any play in it, it's bad. Another thing to try is to connect a (temporary) boost gauge to your car and see if it's making any boost. If it isn't, the problem could very well be your wastegate. If you're making expected boost (~7psi) for stock, your wastegate is functioning.

Hope this helps.

Would a faulty wastegate mean zero psi or less than approx. 7 psi? If I see zero psi, I think I would opt to replace the whole unit, just in case the turbo is also bad. On the bright side, I guess I can do all this when I do the timing belt.
