Easy, but not real easy. Look below the glove box and you will see a formed foam panel with two plastic screws. Unscrew them, and pull the foam piece out. All the way in the back you will see a narrow plastic panel that you move to the right to disengage. The panel falls loose, and then you will see the bottom part of the filter which you pull straight down to remove (along with some debris). Remember which way it comes out, and put the new one in the same way. Getting it back in is not so easy - you end up sort of stuffing it in place, bending the filter somewhat. But, once back in the filter straightens itself out. Put the narrow black panel back in place making sure it's prongs fit properly in the foam gasket on the bottom of the filter.
This was the first change at 20k miles - the original CAF that came out was a DENSO 1K1 819 653A, charcoal impregnated, with a narrow foam seal around the perimeter, a much better filter than the one purchased at the local VW dealer (w/tax=21.51). It was a VW 1K0-819-644-B, not charcoal impregnated, and no foam seal around the perimeter. The dealer told me that was the only filter VW carried.
