I have a 2004 passat with a 1.8T. The car only has roughly 55,000. The car was given to me as a birthday present from my mom, she alsmot never used it This morning when I was leaving to go to my trade school my car went into limp mode right as I put it into reverse. I put the car back into park and turn the ignition off. I started and tuned off the car at least 5 times (I also counted). The same thing kept happening. After the 6th time the gear select worked properly and didn't go into limp mode. The check engine light turned on after the 2nd or 3rd start. I called the Volkswagen dealer my car was bought at and told them what happened. The dealer said they never heard of this happening before. I told my dad and he thinks it might be a selonoid in the gear select . He also thinks the check engine light is from a misfire. The engine didn't sound like it was misfireing. Later when my dad comes home I'm going to borrow his scanner and scan the car for codes. I'll post what ever codes show up. Thish should also make the car easyer to diagnose.

So I checked for codes. Before I could check for codes the engine light went out. So what ever code it was throwing was temporary. The car only seems to go into limp mode when its cold out.
