does your engine have a lot of fuzzies around the front of the block where the timing belt is supposed to be?

 

If the engines runs the problem should not be the timing belt.
Beg, borrow or buy an OBD-II scanner and post us the codes which triggered the light. Vagcom software can do this too. We can tell you much more after.

 

I tired an OBDCII reader and only received this "ERR", no codes. And there is no fraying on belts. Looks like I will need to tow it in.

 

Stupid question but does the motor have oil? and did you remove the little plastic cover thats over the timing belt or did you just check the auxilary belts

 

Judging from your problem description, it sounds as if you have a bad coil pack. Pop your engine cover and make sure they are all seated properly. If they are, then you have to get those codes read somehow... without codes, anything we can do is just guessing.

The oil is good. I will check the timing belt and coil packs. But how would that be responsible for the metallic knocking sound.

 

coil packs don't neccessarily have the same noise, but the same effect. sluggish , misfire-hell, and flashes CEL.

the metal noise i link to the timing belt because you have an interference engine design, which means that the pistons and valves both occupy the same space when active, to produce a higher compression ratio, in less space.

on some cars, the timing belt can slip due to age or whatnot, and you'l have the same effect as not having a timing belt at all, eventually.

 

did the car have the same power that it had before the knocking started?

just had to rebuild 2,0ltr 20 valve due to noise- water pump eventually went and bent exhaust valves,so check water pump:thumbup:
