B5 passat wont connect OBD

OK so I have read quite a few threads about OBD II and re-setting the air bag light and I've tried a few things but I cant get it to read the car's computer
its a 1997 B5 passat from the first month of production - batch no.3 I believe and this is the first time since it left the factory in Germany 16 years ago that it has been plugged into a computer.
it has a 1.9 TDI AFN 110ps (110BHP) engine.
Basically last week at around 180000 miles the ignition switch broke so I changed it the Haynes manual said to remove the steering wheel to get at the screws in the tortoise shell around the steering column and when I did this I removed the air bag plug :( and without thinking when I had fitted the ignition switch I tried it out and started the engine without putting the air bag plug back on.
the air bag light wouldn't normally bother me but it's going for MOT next month and I hear that an air bag light is now a failure so I need to fix it.

I have vag com 409.1 US I don't know if that is the problem maybe the US version is different software not just full of the usual spelling errors lol :p

any help would be much appreciated
thanks in advance
matt

In addition to an incorrectly wired radio, another common cause of no OBDII communication is a failed ABS module. Are your ABS and BRAKE warning lights on or flashing?

Test your vag-com setup by trying to connect to another VW or Audi. If your setup won't connect to any car you probably have a problem with your cable, software or how it's configured.

Another possibility, is your laptop/PC communicating with the interface cable ?
Is your "vag com 409.1 US" registered? If not I don't think you will be able to reset the airbag light with it.
You could a registered copy of VCDS Lite for $99.

I've put the original VW beta radio back in and it's still not working :(

so i tried this on my Dads 2007 VW caddy and got exactily the same set of messages ... i think i must have a software setting or something wrong with VAG-COM :hmmm:

so when i go into vag-com program options and select com port and do the port test i get a box that says
port status: ok
Interface: Found!
Type: serial pass-Through
Opto/iso: No
Ross-Tech Desingh: No

so then i went to OBD II and i got a box that says
VAG-COM OBD-II Compatability Test
Test Status: Test Complete
Result: Car is not ISO/OBD-II Compatable!
if this car is a VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda
Try SELECT-> Individual Controllers

so then i went to the controllers and selected air bag clicked OK on the warning and followed the instructions about turning the ignition off then on
then i got another box that says No Response From Controller!

Thanks for the help guys :)

"I have vag com 409.1 US" If this is what you got from eBay, it is not registered and won't be able to reset the airbag light, and can't be registered, and is probably full of viruses.
VCDS Lite unregistered is FREE and will do more than what you have, but it is limited and won't reset the airbag light without the $99 registration. You can use VCDS Lite with the cable you have.

Go to the link in post #2, scroll to the bottom and do the "Test for this problem yourself"

Recheck the fuses, being a diesel you may not have F28, but should have F29. How did you test them and how do you know they are original ?

The cable price is ok and the freeware is also fine. It just means you can read and clear codes, but not do any code changes, logging or higher technical functions.

Try reading from Engine 01 and see if you get the "No Response" as well. That could be an ABS/Radio/blown fuse issue.

oh well that's something then :)
I've already tried running a few other random tests one of which was the engine and I got the same "No Response"
but please do keep coming with the ideas guys ill just keep trying them until I get it - because I'm out of my own ideas on this ... I'm a bit stumped by it. :/

The fuses are all original as we have owned the car from almost new and Knew the original owner ... he never even had it serviced - didn't keep it long enough never mind doing anything like that lol and I asked my dad and he told me that he's never changed any and its never been in a garage so nobody else could have either and I looked through the sides of the fuses as they are clear Blade fuses not "euro" AKA continental fuses ... and no defiantly no F29 there aren't even contacts in the fuse slot... anyway ill give them a check on the meter just in case I've missed one and ill check the radio circuit too even though I have put the original radio back in - its actually better than the after market one anyway although it's a shame it has no CD or aux :(

and it looks like ill be buying a full registered copy of VCDS Lite then :/

okay yes ill download the VCDS Lite version for free first and give that a go trying to connect maybe that'll get a response :) - but as for not getting a response these electrics are way over my head - I like the mechanical bits I can do that lol :/

Try the VCDS Lite unregistered, if it doesn't communicate do this test.

Go to the link in post #2, scroll to the bottom and do the "Test for this problem yourself"
This is a test for a fault on the K-Line (Usually caused by A/M radio), if the K-Line is shorting you won't be able to scan with any scanner. You should do this test.
