2015 Passat Won't Shift Out of Neutral...

Perhaps someone will stumble across my post and have an idea of what I can do here. About 1 week ago I had just gotten home from work, and backed my car down the driveway, stopping under the "carport" like I do every time I get home, went inside and eventually went to bed. The next morning, when I get in my car to head to work, I start it and reach for the shift knob to put it in drive, only to realize it's already in neutral. Hmmm, that's weird, but I figured I was just tired when I got home last night and didn't put it in park. Luckily my driveway is completely flat or this would be a totally different scenario.

So here's my situation. My car is in neutral and won't shift into any other gear. The shift knob will move into P, R, N, D, +/-, and S, but the transmission doesn't actually engage. When the car is off, if I move the shifter to "park", it will not move out of "park" all. Once I turn the car on, the shift knob button will squeeze and I can move the shifter out of "park" without having to press the brake pedal and can freely move between "P" and "R" without pressing the brake pedal. If I move down into "N" the shifter locks itself and won't move into "R" or "D" until I press the brake pedal, then it can move into either gear. If I put it in "D", I can then shift into "D +/-" and "S" without pressing the brake pedal, but if I go from "D" into "N", the shifter will lock itself again. Also, the gear indicator panel beside the shifter that lights up depending on what great you're in stays lit in neutral all the time. And when I have the car in "P, R, D, D +/-, or S and take my foot off the brake, the dashboard indicator light which is green and depicts a shoe raised up like it's pushing the brake stays lit. And when I cut off the car and open the door, my instrument panel starts beeping and telling me to move selector lever to position P!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!

The is a chance that the cable has come off the connection point at the transmission. There are a number of safeguards to ensure that won't happen, but you never know. This is for the B7 Platform, but it should apply to your 2015.

Open the hood, move to where the battery is, have someone move the shifter with he car off. You should be able to hear the selector change the gears. You can find the connection point it in the video below. Its under the battery tray/ TCM. I've set the video to start at the point where the cable connection is completely exposed.

There are some electroinc controls in the transmission selector. I'll send you a PM with some things to look for.

The image below gives you and idea of the cable path.

May also be the brake switch that releases in the interlock, but the behavior is really odd. Have some one stand behind the car and tell you if all the brake lights come on. That will test part of the switch and verify the switch is getting power. Next, with the car running and the selector in park, do you hear a click when you put your foot on the brake? You should. If not, the switch may not be engaging. I had similar behavior after replacing the transmission mount and not getting the TCM (transmission control module) cable seated correctly, however, my dash was lit up CEL & Traction Control indicators. Anyone near you have a copy VCDS? It might show a code or two.

There are a couple of fuses you will want to check (June 2014 manufacturing date on):

Under the hood:
F10 5A Brake switch and brake lights
F14 5A Power to the TCM

Driver's side dash end:
F25 15A or 25A depending on your options TCM
F28 5A or 20A depending on your options TCM
