I guess it depends on what your ideal Passat is...if it's a family hauler that looks good, there's a lot to like here. If your ideal is a sport wagon, it might be getting a bit on the portly side, as someone mentioned. Personally, I like what I see. They've addressed some notable shortcomings that will really make for a nicer Passat experience. I see they've bumped up the fuel capacity by 2 US gallons (finally).

But really, for me, the key question is going to come down to price. If VWoA can keep their pencil real sharp on this and not price it out of my range, I'll be giving the new Passat a good look when the time comes. I guess a lot depends on the content that VWoA orders and how the Euro does compared to the dollar. When I bought our current Passat in 11/2002, the dollar was about equal to the Euro. Last I looked the Euro was worth about US$1.22. That's a high hurdle right there....

I like the rear end and love the interior, but those overhangs are huge and the overall look leaves me cold. I like it a lot more than the sedan, but there's no way one of these is in my future. The subtlety, simplicity-of-line and elegance of the B5 & 5.5 are gone.

After our current variant is done, it looks like bye-bye VW for now... With a bigger SUV family-hauler/tow vehicle in our immediate future, I'm looking forward to a smaller, sportier car as a Passat replacement.

I plan to keep my 2001 B5 variant as long as I reasonably can. Right now, I don't know with what I shall eventually replace it (Mazda 6 sportwagon?, Subaru Legacy?, B6 variant?, Audi avant?); all I know is that I want another station wagon of roughly the same size, which I find near-perfect.

In general I like it. I don't like the rear awning over the rear window. Wonder if you could take that off? Also too much chrome. Interior looks nice. Wonder if Nav will be available in the US? (for under $4k). Hope they have an option for cloth seats, but I bet they don't.

I really like it! Much better looking than the sedan which looks like a 3-series from the side. The interior is very posh and sharp looking (I'd take the dark grey leather/alcantara interior with the blonde burled wood trim), just like an A6.
It's a bit chunky looking, which may look even more portly with a spoiler package.
The over styled taillights (just like the sedan and the Jetta V) doesn't do it for me, but give it a light tint it would nice (the LEDs are cool too).

I'm afraid with all the added features and toys, this would be a $40,000+ Passat, fully loaded. The Jetta V 2.0T fully loaded is now north of $30,000!
Do I really need all that space, most likely not.
Do I really need all that technological toys, no but it would be nice.
So far I'm leaning towards a loaded 2.0T DSG A3 Quattro for about $32,000 -- nice size and nice performance without the fussy styling.
