Guys with 1.8T, can you please check and advise if your engines sounds similar to this?

Is it supposed to be quieter?

 

bro i have a 2001.5 awm with 110000 and it sounds tha same and my car runs just fine

 

Do all 1.8T engines make a metally noise like this?

To me it doesn't sound smooth, is this a starved engine?

Please, I need your opinions.

i got 2002 b5.5 1.8t that has the sound. i have been told by few people already including one vw trechnician, that its normall sound for 1.8t, and not much can be done. i dont really like it. Ususal sound.
A valve cover gasket is not going to change the sound. Consider reinstalling the plastic cover, it is to reduce noise.

 

I had removed the black cover to better demonstrate the sound in the video.

Do you have a 1.8T, if you do, then can you let us know if it makes this metally sound.

 

AWM owners, please chime in.

 

2002 AWM here, and my car definitely doesn't make that noise. Look into the cam chain tensioner. That would be my guess.

 

Could be one of 3 things i think.

Cam chain

Sludge

Purge valve above you intake box

 

I have been noticing that the engine gets very hot after a drive. If I touch the hood of the car, it's hot.

Is that normal?

The temp gauge shows 190 though.

 

I have the same noise. Can a leaking chain cam gasket cause such a problem.

 

Hi gentlemen,

I have a slight rattle/knock on my 2002 1.8T 126K AWM TIP.

Sounds normal to me, the ticking is perhaps the fuel injectors and nothing to worry about. If the engine runs fine and oil is good, go back to enjoying life.

 

^^ There is no performance loss the car runs fine. I am just trying to be proactive and being alert about the next thing that might break. I am getting paranoid though, every little noise out of the ordinary is making me suspicious.

In addition to the ticking there is also a knocking sound, though it's not very loud so you have to be looking for it to hear it.

 

I am having BOTH of those same noises on my 2003 AWM. Not sure where the noise is coming from. I used a mechanics stethoscope and listened to the T-Belt area (thinking it might be a belt tensioner bearing wearing out) but it sounds fine with the stethoscope and so does the area by the cam tensioner so I am stumped. I do know if either one of those breaks it can severely mess up the head so we can't just ignore it until we know if it's normal.

 

As an update Mike. I just switched brands and weights of oil (went back to M1 0W-40) and ran Chevron Techron Fuel System cleaner into the tank and noticed a quietening of the noises I have. Not sure if it's related or not. I am still gonna do the cam tensioner when I replace the T Belt in a couple of months though. I should also note mine has almost 177K.

 

1.8T ATW sounds the same, always did, drives fine and just done the timing belt and all that goes with it

 

Thanks for the input, it puts me at ease a little that 1.8Ts tend to sound this way. But are there any more AWM owners specifically hearing what's in Mike's video?

It could be me, I saw the image of Mary in my toasted rye once.

 

I now have 133980mi on my 1.8T.

The rattle is gone after I put in AutoRx with conventional oil. (Valvoline 10W40 with one bottle AutoRx for 2800mi)

I am in the rinse phase currently, again with same oil, will do the oil change after 2500mi. Looks like AutoRx treatment has cured the rattle coming from the engine.

What do you guys think? Is the rattle gone?

If you don't hear the rattle, that means AutoRx actually works.
