This could be a very stupid and ignorant question, but would it be possible to to a stock turbo off of a 1.8t passat and out it on a 2.8 v6?

Ok... to expand on my one-word answer: A qualified no. The 1.8T and the V6 have very little in common, so nothing is going to swap directly between. The only effective bolt-up (kinda) upgrade for the V6 is a supercharger kit from PES. The 2.7tt swap mentioned is replacing the entire engine with a much more expensive one from an Audi - hardly a casual project. Adding a turbocharger to the existing engine is at least as complex, as you have to design, fabricate, and fine tune custom parts.

Going back to a short answer, if you have to ask, you don't want to do it.

Do a Squire rear mount type turbo. The V6 as is has plenty of torque so lag as a result of the longer tubing is negligible, plus if you have a FWD there's that wonderful transmission tunnel to tuck all the piping through. http://www.ststurbo.com/ Run a cheaper journal bearing version of a T3/T4 at about 7 PSI and you'll probably be good for 300 BHP.

Here's a good pic of how it works. Just run your respective post-cat sides to the Y pipe in the picture and run a single exhaust down the rest of the trans tunnel. Hell, you could probably just make one yourself if you have a welder and some decent fabrication skills. The only issue would be getting a tune. But you may be able to run an adapted version of the PES supercharger tune.

Those rear setups look like a freakin' nightmare...

You could do it with a K03 on each exhaust bank, if you could find the room. But even if done properly, a LOT of boosted V6s tend to have reliability problems so you'd probably still only be able to use 6-8psi of boost. Overall the supercharger is more compact, and probably more cost-effective.
