Just get the latest OEM revision for coils, and pair them with PFR6Q plugs. Don't mess around with aftermarket coils; the VW ones aren't that expensive if ordered online.

That's exactly what you need. You could probably save a few bucks by doing some research and shopping around. I got my last set of PFR6Q's for less than $40, and 4 coils can be found for close to $100.

 

Go for either the coil packs that have part number ending with a "D" (as in your link) or these...which are equivalent.

 

If your staying stock then go with oem coils and PFR6Q plugs

 

Go ahead and replace those old spark plugs, but I wouldn't consider replacing the coil packs unless it is still misfiring after replacing the plugs.

Car is throwing a code:

P0030 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1: Heating Circuit: Malfunction / Open Circuit

I presume this is the upstream O2 sensor, correct? Where's the best place / price to get this? I'll replace it at the same time I do the coils & plugs.

Yes. B1 is for Bank 1 (only applies to V6 and W8), S1 is for Sensor 1. The Bosch upstream sensor is 17351 (17090 works too). Amazon has it for $82, Advance Auto $90 with coupon, RockAuto $77. I've ordered from all 3 and have had good results.

R8 coil units don't cost that much more than the oem coils. they also offer a greater spark and people over at audizine report better lifecycle from them.
they tend to operate better with a tune.

 

Plus the red top coils automagically make your car faster. Been running them now for 20k miles along with larger gapped plugs. Did not notice a difference from the switch.

the red top coils don't really make it FASTER per-se, it just increases the spark magnitude to make it more responsive at different engine power load ranges, and can ASSIST in KEEPING more power. either way, not a bad deal!

I got same code and replaced O2 sensor with a new one. Close examining old O2 sensor, I found there was a thick white coating deposit due to years of use. Used a towel, I can remove the white powder. I didn't put it back but my guess is it should work again after cleaning. Unfortunately I cut its wire when removed it. So when P0030 shows up, cleaning O2 sensor might just fix it (save $100).

 

What you can reach for cleaning on a O2 sensor is not what counts. You can clean the exterior stainless steel cover, but the actual sensor is inside = not accessible. If the O2 needs cleaning, and it's less than 80,000 miles, there is something else wrong with engine or the gasoline you're using.
