01 V6 4Motion died while driving, won't start

Seems like this is the same old story based on search, but I haven't seen it with a V6 yet. Anyway, died while driving - no odd sounds or shuddering - and wouldn't start again. Engine cranks, but won't fire. Have power, and it's acting like I'm out of gas but I've got a half tank. Based on searching, I'm hoping that it's just the ESS, but I'm not sure how to check if it is that or something more sinister. Help!

Crank for 7 seconds continuously. After 5-6 seconds, the ECM will go in to a "limp" mode wherein it assumes the ESS has failed. The engine will start and run OK; the idle will be higher than usual and the EPC light will be on. Beats walking home!

If it's not the ESS, the above won't work.

Did you try the above suggestion, and what was the result ?
Have you checked the fuses and the fuel pump relay ?

Check the timing belt too.
compression check to rule out any valve / piston interaction.

Sounds like a classic fuel pump failure. When you open the driver's door, or turn the ignition key to Run, can you hear the fuel pump run for one second? If no, then you'll need to do some troubleshooting to know what's next.

I can't hear my fuel pump running, but it does for 1 second after switch on.

similar problem with my 01 v6 4motion, Would drive ok but when i stopped turned it off it wouldnt start,it would turn over and start momentary then just crank. Gave list of engine codes.Would do it after an hour or a week or a day,frustrating to trace. Traced it to dirty wiring plug connectors behind ECU in plastic box in engine bay,up near battery,windscreen wiper motor. Find my threads and read what i did. this may be your problem too. cheers
