I too, am having slipping problems on my 99 tip after a filter and Pennzoil ATF change, Acts like its low on fluid,so i jacked the back of the car up and tried to overfill it, No difference. approx 3000 miles on fluid and getting worse.
what pennzoil product did you use? i'm not aware they meet or even say they meet the VW ATF1 standard...
you may have just put the wrong oil in...

did some searching with their specifications, and although the multi-vehicle stuff DOES meet the "LT71141" spec from zf for use in the bmw vehicles and states it's "equivalent" to atf1 spec, it is NOT specified or advised for vw products.

just because something is equivalent does not mean it's the same. just means it can work in bmw's with that spec. the vw spec can be different enough to have a problem, which is what you may be having.

still need to know what variation you used.

very interesting... so it seems that although you didn't have any severe slipping you did have harder shifts... what kind of traffic do you usually have? forgot to ask that :p
Well I forgot that part of the equation too....light traffic. I live on the outskirts of Richmond, so no downtown-stop-go crap. I have about 16 miles of actual traffic a day....rest of the 72 mile round trip is highway. Yeah...definitely had harder shifts. I could have had slipage, but I'm not technical enough with a VAG-com to "see" it.

I used penzoil multi vechicle part #159920 ,Its what the penzoil oil dealer Sandburg Oil recommended. It may or maynot be the cause,I purchased the car with a driver side seal leak, I would add tranny fluid every two weeks and it would seem fine. I used your thread on the B5.5 seal replacement. Everything was the same for my B5 including bearing part #s,As you know the only difference is theres no seal between diferential and tranny,so I thought I would do a filter and fluid change. seems like it is slipping more lately. I would really be happy if I could do a fluid change and see some improvment. Where is the best place to get the right tranny fluid? I am 100 miles from closest dealer.

well, the slips we had with xyro's car were NOTICEABLE major slips. and seeing as how he did a LOT of rush-hour stop and go and basic city driving, his 15k miles prolly equates to a LOT more miles than your current driving schedule/routes. there's just so much more use of the hydraulicly activated channels whereas yours are locked into a single gear for a lot longer and have the torque converter locked for a lot longer, keeping the fluid a LOT cooler.

glad to hear that helped out for ya!!!
also... eh... i wouldn't trust that fluid... it says it meets the bmw spec like i said above, but meeting and being approved are two different things. if you're having slip issues, use the valvoline maxlife which is rated for "vw automatic vehicles built prior to 2005" as it states on the back of the bottle. stuff's pretty cheap. $8 a bottle versus double for oem. i understand that he recomended it, but from all research i've looked into with their multi-vehicle of that part number... they don't meet vw's atf1 standard.
if they had met or come close to, they would have said it meets it on the bottle. they like to list stuff like that at every chance they have, and would NOT miss any chance, as it boosts their sales! (more market volume applicability)

Agreed and THAT helps me understand my tranny better too...thanks!

I've seen it as low as $9.95 somewhere, but that was a while back.

Not too far from you (shipping, time) is http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Passat/Transmission/261/4 -- $11.95 plus shipping. Order some oil filters at the same time, maybe engine/cabin air/etc. to amortize the shipping.

Drain/fill is probably a bit under 4 quarts.
it's actually a little over 5 quarts. i've been witness to 3 jobs performed by Pz. (one on mine, and two on my buddy's car)

and ARGH how did i not find that site... :banghead:
cheapest i had found was 14.15 with free shipping over $50....

You must be thinking of a pan drop, not a drain and fill.

I can buy it at a local parts store for $12.95/qt (plus tax, but no shipping)

Im on Mobil 1 ATF (changed and rebuilt tranny about 3-4k miles ago).

Car has been fine until today. Weather has been cooler than normal (50-60 F) and gas mileae has been down. But today the 2nd gear is acting weird. Feels like maybe the TC is locking and unlocking and is generally confused.

havent been able to check fluid levels, but the past week or so ive been leaking some fluid by the front of the driver side. I thought it was the power steering related but there are 2 rubber hoses in that area as well and they seem to be leaking slightly.

another thing it could be is my driver side axle may be bad. i get tire vibrations at 30-40mph and goes away at any higher speeds. Could fluid leak out by where the axle connects to the tranny?

partsquick is OK

Sweet, it's back in stock.

has anyone bought from this place? I'm always a little hesitant to buy from a new online store.
I've ordered my oil change stuff from them (Pentosin 5W-40 and Mann filter), and also my ATF fluid filter (Febi), pan gasket and Pentosin ATF-1.
No problems - unless split shipments, at no additional charge, bothers you?

first off, those two rubber hoses by the front driver of the car are your power steering cooler lines. they go to that little loop that's on the front of your radiator. that's power steering's radiator, and all it needs. small, eh?

if you think your car is leaking, it would be very wise to pop it up on jackstands, and inspect around the transmission pan for areas of oil leak, and then trace it back to where it possibly came from.

and yes, it IS possible for the trans to leak out of the axle flange shafts.
look in the info base for a "axle flange shaft seal" thread i created a while back.
that, or just use the search feature, threads started by my name, and the info base. it will pop up. it's fairly lengthy, but i made it as informative as possible about the job and what all is going on.
the car was xyro's, and it was leaking at the drivers side. the passenger side is fairly different as it seals back actual gear oil (diff has seperate contained fluid).

Update:

I finally changed my fluid after 4 months of my torque converter unlock problem while hot. See: http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=274911

The torque converter got worse over time, but would always lock when cold. It would unlock after 10-15 minutes of driving or for multiple stops with 15 minutes or more of driving.

I drained my trans cooler and valve body using compressed air to get more fluid out. I added 6.5qts of Pentosin. The torque converter now stays locked all of the time, but I have not driven more than 45 minutes at a time (at warm temps too). The engagement is also much stronger as it locks and the rpm drop quickly. There is some minor flaring under hard throttle, but no more than 200 rpm. It had been 400-500 rpm at it's worst.

A longer drive will tell if this has cured my torque converter problems, but right now I am pretty happy about it.

late input. someone on this thread said that he used pennziol multi vechile atf i also used it a coupl or so years ago, it said that it meets the lt spec etc but i then rang them up and was assurred it was good to use in a vw passat, i had no problems with it but when i did another pan drop about 15-20,000 miles later the fluid looked nasty. it looked like the original fluid did after 95000 miles. i switched to castrol import multi vechile atf, no problems.
pennziol multi vechile atf for the past year does no longer have the meets lt spec info on it, so for some reason its no longer good for vw, maybe changed formula:hmmm: or maybe some people with broken transmissions......

what happens is if a lab runs a test, say a bmw test lab, and comes back with unsatisfactory results that could damage a lot of their name brand, they get REALLY pissed about them supposedly "meeting or exceeding" specifications.

that, or they just threatened pennzoil with a lawsuit and said "take our goddamn spec off your cheap crappy oil jug!"

Meeting a BMW spec has nothing to do with ATF working in a VW transmission. BWM sourced the auto trans from GM for some of its cars, so the trans dna shares nothing with VW.

I'd stick with a better quality fluid, like the Pentosin.

Or I'd drive a manual, which I do. Now, where's the replacement for that exploded dual-mass flywheel ...
