For those of you with the euroswitch and relay 173 pulled, how when and where do you use your city lights? Do you ever use them? ... and is it just me or do they look cool - Even the stock color.

In the city. And the suburbs. As a matter of fact, all the time that is not nighttime, kind if like DRLs. I only use the fogs when I need to like when it is foggy out. I have the 42DD LED city lights, they are really blue and look better than the high-intensity ones.

you can get these 6leds (w5w, 194) from superbrightleds.com... the reason i am not running those anymore it's because the led output was bright but wasnt wide, so it only shoots straight pretty much. they are really bright, but for i went through about 6 of those in a few months because they burn out (or simply some of the leds stop working properly, either totally die or start blinking). the superbrightleds people said it was a bad batch and sent me replacements but they still behaved the same way... so i am staying away from them from now on altough i am tempted to try the wide leds they now got.

i've only tried the 6led and it seems like there's a lot of room left. i am not sure about the other bulbs, perhaps you can do a quick dimension comparison.

Let me see if I can explain to you the main purpose of citylights (runninglights)

As you can tell they are usually found on euro-spec vehicle.

In most european countries side markers/Park light are not a Government requirement.

But they are required to have some sort of lighting that would make the care visible in low light condition. The running light or city light is what appears in the front of the car this is generally white light and in the rear the taillight satify this requirement.

Depending on the design of the headlight the running light will be a part of the light or it would be separate.

VW is just one of the many companies the have added the city/running light into the headlight to reduce the need for a separate light.

So the chime in with all the other the City/running light should be used anytime low light conditions are present but headlights are not requires such as when it is raining or twilight conditions.

I hope the explains things to you and anyone else that wondered what they are for.

If you wanted to go for the real european look you would have to disable your bumper side lights. But even in Germany drivers add them to their cars it seems that it may be a new requirement.
