Since you need it immediately, you are going to have to get it from a dealer, or if your area is lucky enough to have an import auto parts store, Pentosin also makes G12 coolant. No Prestone, No Dex-Cool. You are better to drive with slightly low coolant (watch that temp gauge!) than to add anything else.

For when your needs are less urgent, ecstuning.com and autobahnfluids.com have it for fairly reasonable prices.

G12 should be $15 +/- $3 per gallon from your neighborhood dealership. For full drain and refill on a 1.8T (not sure about V6) you will need 1 gallon coolant and 1 gallon distilled water. You could be left with a little from the 2 gallon mixture.
so if i just want to top the thing off i need to make the mixture...right?

Yeah easily $20 a gallon these days. I paid 20.37 or something obscure like that plus tax last week. You need to mix it. It has a chart on the back.

Also be careful here:
Just use distilled water to fill it up a little above MIN
The parts guy said that the g12 coolant and water mixture is prone to the water boiling off first leaving an unnatural concentration of g12 coolant to water (and thus lowering the cooling properties of the mixture). Flushing is the best way to go every couple years to make sure you still have the 50/50 mix. Just a thought.

How does water boil off in a closed system???

It says that if no coolant is available, use distilled water!!!

I'm not saying it's ideal but IF he has no choice then what do you suggest???

Well the first question that needs to be answered is WHY is the coolant below the minimum? Sounds like a serious leak to me. I've never had that problem.

Yes you could add distilled water if you were worried about contaminating the G12 coolant. Or you could use Prestone's new long life coolant in the yellow (not silver) container. It is formulated to work with all coolant types.
