Centerbore and Hubcentric Rings

A centerbore is the machined circular hole on the back of a wheel. Its purpose is to ensure that the wheel fits perfectly centered onto the vehicle's hub.

Centerbores on most OEM wheels come machined to exact specifications for the vehicles they come on. Aftermarket wheels usually have a standard centerbore measurement, which may or may not fit your vehicle without a small plastic adapter called a hubcentric ring.

They fill in the gap so they are flush with your hub

What he said... but it also helps distribute load forces. Like when your wheel slams into a pot hole. You wouldn't want all that force transfered directly to the lug bolts. The hubcentric ring helps distribute some of that force to the hub. Which is why I prefer metal hubcentric rings over plastic.

BBS, for one, sells "PFS hardware kits" - metal hubcentric rings, retaining clips, and the proper length tapered lugs - for their wheels to fit a variety of vehicles.
