Weird crackling noise

I have recently noticed a strange crackling noise which sounds like its coming from behind the glove box.
All my functions work IE: Lights, horn, stereo, AC, but i did notice the other day the one of my LED side light bulbs was flickering as though it was either a loose connection or the bulb was about to blow?

Does anyone have any ideas what this crackling could be and do you think it could be related to the bulb issue? or possible a fuse?

Cheers

That's strange, there aren't a great amount of electrical connectors etc behind the glove box area. The main looms terminate normally behind the steering column area.

However, It may pay to have a look. The easiest way to have a mooch around there is to remove the side cover, like the one you remove for the fuse box. It will just pop off. you can see it by opening the passenger door.

If you just turn the ignition on, without starting the engine can you still hear it? To turn all the fan functions off if you have climatronic, just keep lowering the fan speed until OFF appears in the display. Cause the vent motors make a small noise being similar to stepping motors as they adjust.

There is no burning, ive stuck my head right next tot he centre console by the climate control unit and it does sound like its possibly coming from behind there.
Its not like an electrical crackling noise more lick a clicking. i bought the car in October 2004 and it has only started doing within the last month or so

I have this same issue - although i can hear the crackling noise while the car is running and over the radio in some cases. I have had 2 VW dealers look at it and they both said they think part of it could be related to the climatronic. In both cases, I couldn't get the sound to full volume when they were in the car with me, which was frustrating as they basically said the noise was normal. It seems to be the worst when the car isn't warm in the morning, as I have noticed when I drive for a while it seems to go away a bit. I would really like to find a way to get rid of it - if anyone has any thoughts, I would greatly appreciate the help

I've had my '99 for 3 years now, ever since I bought it, the stepper motors for the climatronic air flaps have creaked and clicked, when I check the car for fault codes on a service (VAG COM), there are a couple of flap motor faults, but the system works fine in all modes. So while its working, its saving me stripping the dash out, I can live with that!

ok - i have isolated the clicking noise. It is one of the vent motors under the passenger side of the dash. You can see it without take the glove compartment off, as it has a red plastic control arm. It appears the arm is constantly activated and moves back and forth for no reason, causing the clicking noise. Anyone have any thoughts on a way to get it to stop. Seems like it would not need to move constantly for the climate control to work.

Is This The Same Noice You Are Hearing?

Hi All,
I came across this thread late. Just traded my high-mile 2004 Passat 4cyl for a low mile V6 in insanely clean condition. I'm extremely happy. But this morning I was sitting quitely in the car reading the manual with the engine off but ignition on and heard this strange clicking coming from the passenger side under the dash. Sounds similar to what I see discribed here but to me it sounds exactly like a hard drive in a computer. I stuck my iPhone into the clove compartment and captures a sound file of it. Wanted to share it it with you to see if anyone had any ideas.
I tossed the file up on my website. Here's a link. Thanks in advance!
