Well, I'm pretty sure this isn't a B5

but it's the unknown VW I was talking about with AtomicAlex at the Columbia GTG.

Anyone know what this is? It's sitting between some *really* rotting old dodge pickups and something else covered up. Looks like it might be fun to try and fix up. I don't know anything about it.

Anyone?

Re: Unknown VW (Bean)

Actually, it's the predecessor to our modern B5's.

It is indeed a Type III, which was a designation given to the Notchback, Squareback(seen above) and Fastback

Squareback (Variant)

The wagon version known as a Squareback was also known as a Variant as the Notchback was the standard.

The Type 3's evolved into the Type 4's which were the 411 and 412.

The 411 and 412 then evolved into the 'Dasher' which was also known as a B1.

Soooo, think of it this way. Your beautiful Passat was once a Dasher and before that a Notchback or Squareback(Variant)

Re: Unknown VW (Bean)

My family used to own a square-back when I was little.
Was this related to the Karmann Ghia? The styling cues and wheel bases look very similar.

Re: Unknown VW (3U36)

My dad had a squareback, in very good condition, until he sold it in '90 or '91. What a cool car...very lightweight, with lots of cargo space for moving. Plus, a pretty good DIY car (as most earlier VWs were)

Oh, man, what a flashback! A friend of mine from high school had one of these in the mid to late 70's. It was some kind of dark green color that hadnn't seen a coat of wax since the day it rolled of the factory floor. It had a bum starter and you either had to park facing downhill, or everyone had to push to catch it in gear. Ah, that car was our chariot for many adventures (most of which the statute of limitations have long run out).

Re: Unknown VW (Altair 4)

Isn't this just a squareback. What we called it? Friend of mine had a white one with a mean engine in it. I don't know if it was a porsche engine, but he rebuilt the engine one summer.(VW and Porsche same back than) Dual Carb all chromed. The thing was fast. Until, he forgot to bleed his brakes, couldn't stop in an intersection, and smashed into a motorcyclist. End of the squareback.

Re: Unknown VW (Altair 4)

In looking at that picture again, I think those are Michelin XZX radials on it. I ran a set of those on my old Dasher. Those tires must be like 20 years old (if that's a recent pic)! Geez, this would be a fun little project car, wouldn't it?

That would be a fun project vehicle, too. Let us know when we can see it!

Re: Unknown VW (Altair 4)

My neighbor had one across the street.
She even had an automatic AND air conditioning, from VW.
Garage kept since new, she was the original owner. Every so often, her husband would be outside lovingly checking for rust, etc and repaired all that was found.
She sold it in 90 or 91 with around 45K miles. Bought a Camry, realized what she did, and went out to buy a New Beetle.
She should've kept the squareback, if you ask me.

Re: Unknown VW (Bean)

Thanks so much for all the replies.

I am going to check this out further to see if the guy that owns it uses it, wants it, or whatever.

Maybe I'll get some pics of the inside.

Thanks again,

Mike
