Turn Signal and Flasher Operation Intermittent

Problem:

Turn signals stop working randomly and intermittently. By "stop working" I mean that when I move the lever to Right-Turn-Signal or Left-Turn-Signal, there are no turn signals (outside), no light flashing (on the dashboard), and no clicking noise. When this happens, the Emergency Flasher also does not work (no clicks, no lights outside, no lit-up light on the switch). When this happens, the wipers do work. When this happens, the lights themselves still work, and will flash as usual if lock/unlock is pressed on the remote.

Then, after some time (few seconds to several minutes or more), and with turning various things on/off or with leaving them alone, then the turn signals and the emergency flasher will suddenly operate normally again until they stop working again later.

I have not spent much time debugging this, and hope that I can find an answer. But if anybody knows already, please tell me! :)

I am assuming it is not the relay, since the wipers continue to work all the time. Maybe it is the flasher switch (or the clicking unit inside it)? Maybe it is the turn signal switch? Maybe it is me?

Thanks for any helpful advice you can send my way!

check your fuses. if those are ok, then it sounds like it could be your hazard switch going bad. this was the first thing that happened to me after buying my b5.5 used a few years ago. it's a cheap part (~$35) and a very easy fix of just pulling the old one out and putting in the new one.

Volkswagen Passat B5 FWD V6 30v > Interior > Switches > Hazard > ES#2062580 Hazard Flasher Switch - 3B0953235D01C

when this happened to me, my flashers and turn-signals would permanently stay lit (no blinking) anytime that i was using them. it's slightly different then how you describe what is happening to you, but if it's something that is only affecting the operation of your turn-signals and hazard flashers, then that switch is a usual suspect.

Your problem most likely caused by bad turn signal relay, also the hazard switch, which is a very common problem. You can also try to clean the contacts inside, but in my case the problem was caused by weak and split plastic support to the spring contact which can’t be fixed easily. I just spent $25 to get a new relay.

Sometimes your turn signal stalk may have bad connections which will cause the similar symptoms.

Closure on this issue

Once again, PassatWorld is completely right. It was the Hazard Switch -- I replaced it with a $5 part from junkyard and now turn signals and hazard lights work as expected. Thanks Everybody!!!

Couple of notes:

1. The picasa web page pointed to by one of the threads here suggests to clean the contacts on the relay inside the hazard switch. That's an OK suggestion, I suppose, but the picture that believes it is pointing to the contacts... isn't. I will return there and try to make a comment on that picture.
2. I tried cleaning the actual contacts, as well as cleaning the hazard switch insides in general, and only succeeded in completing one of my all too common accomplishments: "fixed beyond repair". :banghead: So then I HAD to get a replacement.
3. I will investigate more later, but I believe that my intermittent failure was a problem with the relay coil rather than the contacts. With the switch open and connected, I could manually push the relay closed and then the correct light(s) would flash. This leads me to believe that the contacts are fine, but the relay coil is/was not working.
4. For various reasons, I "upgraded" to a rev D hazard switch from a rev B. The sound is different: it is quieter, and what appears to me as the audible "on" click is synched with the arrow lights on the dashboard going "off." No big deal, just different, and I will get used to it after a little while.

Thanks again!
