Ticking sound at idle

I am getting a rattling sound at idle, like a ticking kind of thing. When I up the rpm's a bit, it stops. Sounds like a sheet metal type of shround or something but I can't see or find anything loose in the engine compartment or under the front end, either when the car is idling or off.

Anyone else experience this? Any ideas of what it could be?

Re: Ticking sound at idle (D ZIGNER)

I had mine at dealer with same description. He told me that is the way the 1.8 sounds. " it is not a quiet engine", the dealer went on to say it was the air pump or secondary air pump (I am not sure, by then I realized I was not getting anywhere with him). that makes the ticking sounds.

Re: Ticking sound at idle (blakwag)

My 1.8 had the same noise, as did all of the fuel injected cars I've owned. As far as my 1.8 was concerned, the noise came from the injectors pulsating… perfectly normal. My v6 does the same thing…

I should have added that at 28k mileage, I seem to have just noticed it or it's becoming louder? Makes me want to set the idle speed 200 rpm higer

so I don't have to hear it at stop lights when the windows are down. Pedestrians have even looked (maybe it was the car though)

nah, the "newness" of the car just wore off and now your starting to notice these things. The 1.8T is NOT a quiet engine by any standard.....downright noisy if you ask me. But trust me all is fine, the N-80 valve is the culprit. I flipped out the first time i heard it

Re: Ticking sound at idle (D ZIGNER)

Yeah, all these things make some amount of noise. The N-80 valve, the secondary air pump (if you have one
Image
) and the fuel injection system can all make noises too. But I think the most obvious source of all that tapping, especially if the sound rises and falls with the speed of the engine is from all those valves!!!
Image
Remember, there are 20 valves in that cylinder head. And with all those valves there are other moving valve train parts that could possibly make noise too. I also have a funky tapping sound coming from my engine from time to time. Also remember that the engine is turbo charged (duh!
Image
) and that turbo engines tend to use a bit more oil that normally asperated engines. So you need to check the oil level on your 1.8T more often than you would with the V6 engine. Once the oil level starts to drop a bit, then the oil pump may not be able to put as much oil up on top in the valve train area as it would like. Thus the tapping sound of cams hitting the lifter pucks and then the lifter puck hitting the valve stem. With the propper oil level all the metal sufaces are coated with oil and the sound (as well as wear impact) is lessened.

Sheet metal sound could be a loose exhaust heat shield, under the car. I've had a number of cars where the tack weld gives way at one corner, and the thing picks up a sympathetic resonance from the car while it's running. Worth a look-see.

Re: Ticking sound at idle (Altair 4)

one quick solution i found is to turn up the volume of the radio, then i dont hear rattles or ticking noises....

Re: Ticking sound at idle (D ZIGNER)

D ZIGNER,

I recently noticed the same thing. It's not a ticking but a slight rattle ONLY when the car is in gear NOT in P or N and only at idle. I'll wait to see if it gets any worse, right now you can only hear it when it is absolutely quiet (no radio or other noises)

Re: Ticking sound at idle (Sharky)

It's a consistent sound until you up the rpm, then it's gone. I'm going to look into the couple of suggestions that say it's not normal just to be sure. I know it's NOT the low oil mentioned as I keep a real close eye on that.

quote:
I've noticed the same ticking. It's just the way the 1.8t sounds. I've heard at least 20 1.8t cars and they all have the same tick.

Maybe we all have cars with loose parts?

Kidding! Thanks for the heads up!

Re: Ticking sound at idle (D ZIGNER)

Most likely not what you're hearing, but:

My car used to do a tick/rattle/whirr noise when letting off the gas. Wasn't so much at idle as it was coming down from higher revs. Turned out to be a loose wastegate and dodgey turbine.

Just chucking in another possibility.

Re: Ticking sound at idle (flying_scotsman)

Ditto the oil top off. My car was making this noise. I upgraded to Mobil 1, and it is not as noisy at is used to be. Just my 2cents.

Re: Ticking sound at idle (redb5sdca3)

ok, i have this tick at idle as well, its only there sometimes during the idle. i left my car running and popped the hood and waited for the tick. it comes from this little black thing next to the air intake. i'm not sure what it is, but its got a black hose running to it and out the other side. like dalip said above it may be the n 80 valve, i'm not sure what it looks like but its in the same area he was mentioning. it is annoying as heck too, but oh well.

i have the V6.
