Re: Ticking sound at idle (D ZIGNER)
Yeah, all these things make some amount of noise. The N-80 valve, the secondary air pump (if you have one
) and the fuel injection system can all make noises too. But I think the most obvious source of all that tapping, especially if the sound rises and falls with the speed of the engine is from all those valves!!!
Remember, there are 20 valves in that cylinder head. And with all those valves there are other moving valve train parts that could possibly make noise too. I also have a funky tapping sound coming from my engine from time to time. Also remember that the engine is turbo charged (duh!
) and that turbo engines tend to use a bit more oil that normally asperated engines. So you need to check the oil level on your 1.8T more often than you would with the V6 engine. Once the oil level starts to drop a bit, then the oil pump may not be able to put as much oil up on top in the valve train area as it would like. Thus the tapping sound of cams hitting the lifter pucks and then the lifter puck hitting the valve stem. With the propper oil level all the metal sufaces are coated with oil and the sound (as well as wear impact) is lessened.
