Hi all,

i have a 99 VW PAssat GLS and my cigarrette lighter is stuck in the down position. I'm not a smoker, but this means that i cant plug in my cool new Garmin toy while driving :( Does anyone know how to get it to pop up?

Another problem i have is that even if it pops up, i remember that it did not give power :( I've checked the fuse box and the fuse is good. Also, the cigarrette lighter in the trunk gets power, and i assume they run on the same fuse. Any thoughts that dont involved going to the dealer?

Thanks in advance!

I know my front lighter is pretty sensitive and the contacts on the plug have to be just right in order to get power. And the cigarette lighter will pop out when it gets hot so if you fix the power to the lighter problem, it should heat up and pop right out.

That's really weird.. because if you are talking about your outlet on the back of the center console (for the backseats).. I have the same exact problem. It actually started because somehow the outlet got popped out of the center console and was hanging out, and the spring had fallen out somehow. So I was trying to get the spring back in and was unsuccessful (still have the spring actually) and then was trying to get the outlet back into its spot which was practically impossible. Finally I was able to get it back in its spot but in order to get the outlet out you have to pull it up (rather than push it and have it pop out from the spring). In the midst of trying to get the outlet put back in, there was a spark from the wires or something (no idea why)... and surprise, the power no longer works. I have a feeling I blew the fuse, but haven't taken the time to try and find it yet.

Let me know if you figure it out.. I'd definitely like to know where the fuse is at the least!

You allowed one of the parts that has power in it to touch a ground. In other words you "shorted" that circuit and blew the fuse. You'll want to fix the lighter socket before you apply power to it again. Once the socket is repaired and safe from shorting, you'll need to replace the fuse for that circuit.

If you open the drivers door you will see a vertical plastic panel that covers the left side of the dash. This panel is usually hidden between the door and the dash when the door is closed. That plastic panel will pop off and give you access to the fuse panel. Your owners manual or the back of that plastic panel you popped off should have some information showing which fuse is for which accessories. Always use the size fuse you are supposed to use for a particular circuit. Never use a higher rated fuse than the specs call for.
