Shifting problems/shifter adjustment

I've heard a few people mention something about adjusting the shifter on the passat's 5-speed when people have complained about difficulty getting the tranny into gear. How exactly is this done? I've had serious trouble getting my car into 2nd gear when cold, some trouble with 3rd, and just a little notchiness going into 4th. Some mornings I swear its not going to go into second. Most of the time it seems to only give me trouble when the car isn't fully warmed up, but sometimes it does it when hot too. I've heard other people say they're tranny shifts nice and smooth, so i figure something must be wrong with mine. And I did change my gear oil to Royal Purple 75w-90 synthetic and it made no difference, but atleast I know the oil level is ok. But I was hoping someone could tell me the full procedure for doing this, and what are the chances the dealership will actually know what I'm talking about? If this doesn't fix my problem, I plan on going with an APR snub mount and an ASP tranny stabilizer bar to take all slop out of the drivetrain. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the can't get it into 2nd is normal from what I've experienced with VW's when it is cold (ie under 30F). Once the tranny/engine warms this is no problem. But the trouble with 3rd and 4th is what I'm curious about. I changed my Fluid to RedLine MTL and the tranny is the same if not a better on cold mornings. Never had an issue with 3rd or 4th with any fluid on the tranny. I'd be interested in what a mechanic has to say though

mackman,

I have the same problem and my car is at the dealer today to get it solved. I have trouble shifting into second even when it's a 50 degree morning and the car sat in the garage all night. And the 1st, 2nd gears don't loosen up all that much even after a 50 mile ride. 3rd and 4th on my are getting increasingly notchy and I even have a snag going into 5th. The only thing that I'm noticing is that the problem is getting worse steadily. Couldn't engage 5th right away when passing on my way home yesterday. That's a big safety issue.

I'll post by the end of the day today with the verdict from the dealer. I consider this a huge driveability issue and will be going down to the mat on this one. My car only has 1350 miles on it!

AlexR, I'm experiencing the almost the exact same things as you only mine hasn't really gotten progressivly worse. I'm interested to know what happens too. I never bothered taking mine in cause I figured they'd just give some BS that thats normal. Mines a V6 and has 34.000 miles on it incase anyone cares. But does anyone know the adjustment procedure for the shifter? Is there one?

Got my car back from the dealer last night and, as expected, I got the "it's normal" explanation stating that they couldn't reproduce the problem. I've even asked my sales guy (who I trust) to take the car for a spin since he's had 2 GLX's for demos with manual transmissions. Even he said he didn't feel anything out of the ordinary. I was ticked... The sales guy did encourage me not to give up though and escalate the problem to VW regional manager so that he can take a look at.

Got in the car to drive it home and it was shifting nearly flawlessly except for a small snag going into fifth (about 50% of the time). But the dealer says they didn't do a thing expect drive it and check the fluid level. Hmmmm... Got in the car this morning...~50 degrees outside, car sat in the garage all night...shifts just fine even the first 1st-2nd shift. Hmmm... A slight snag going into fifth occassionally but that's about it. Doesn't feel like it's not going to go into a gear anymore. So now I feel like I'm loosing my mind. I haven't owned anything but a manual shift car for 13 years so I KNOW I was feeling something odd with that shifter. All I can do for now is just keep an eye on it and take it to another dealer next time.

mackman, My recommendation would be to take it to a local dealer and have them look at it. If they don't find anything, take it to another dealer. Then escalate through VWoA if you need to. The other route may be to take it to a good non-dealership VW shop since they know these cars inside and out. They'll probably put their finger on it immediately. I feel the problem with the dealerships is that they don't see a whole lot of 5/6spd Passats. Apparently only 8% of Passats that make it to the US have manual transmissions. That's just wrong.

see, thats exactly why I didn't take it to the dealer in the first place, I figured I'd get the same explanation that you did. I really don't wanna spend the money to have them look at it, and then tell me they couldn't find anything. Its like with my coolant leak, it was low enough for the light to come on ( yes, I did visually check the level too) and they tryed to tell me they couldn't find any leaks. Then they gave me some BS story about how since theres water mixed with the coolant, maybe some of it evaporated, causing the level to drop. Come on! Its a sealed, pressurized system for crying out loud....the coolant had to go somewhere! anyways, I might just take your advise though, but I know there gonna tell me theres nothing wrong. You know, sometimes I wonder if its clutch not quite disengauging, causing the grinding, and then once you drive for awhile, the brake fluid ( slave cyl. works off of the brake fluid) heats up, expands, and gives full disengaugment. I know, its a long shot, but just an idea.

i was having the same problem with the shifter...i couldn't for the life of me get into first gear...then while driving on the parkway, my clutch completely blew out on me...the clutch pedal wouldn't come up and trying to shift was pointless because i got nothing but a banging sound from the tranny, which means bye bye clutch....

it's currently having a new clutch installed and having the shifter linkage realigned...

take it to a mechanic and have them check the linkage...if it's not that, it might be a clutch problem like mine...

this is really starting to drive me nuts, especially since I changed the gear oil. I think I'm gonna take it to the dealer soon, maybe have them check my driver side window out while they're at it. I wish I knew if there was an adjustment procedure for the shifter though so I could do it myself. I hate having to take my car to the dealer and be without it all day...major inconvenience. Does anyone know of a procedure for adjusting the shifter? What is it?
