Secondary Air Injection Pump Replaced!

I just had my secondary air injection pump replaced. It was $500 with labor!
The pump started making a lot of noise about a month ago. It was starting to sound like a jet engine. Two weeks later the noise stopped and my CEL light came on, along with a "Emissions Workshop" message.

I'm at 33k miles now. The part is not covered under any kind of warranty (according to my dealer) so I'm forced to eat the cost. Doh! I think they have to take off the front bumper to get at the damn thing.

This really sucks. It's times like these when I question my decision to buy a VW. All will be forgotten once I get my car back I'm sure

At least until I get my CC bill

Alpha, isn't that the low-mounted pump that injects clean air from the airbox into the exhaust stream? That sounds a little steep for an air pump...

From the Haynes manual, it looked pretty straightforward. Man, $500 will just about get you a new timing belt with labor, ouch!

im sorry i dont know but would that be covered under the 3yr/36k mile warrenty or whatever it is?

Re: Secondary Air Injection Pump Replaced! (highrpms)

My '00 B5 had a 24k b2b warranty. I'm at 33k now so that's long expired.

The remaining emissions and/or powertrain warranty does not cover that particular item. I asked my service guy and he said it's not covered. So I'm SOL.

Oh well

I wonder what the EPA would say about that part failing so early. They mandate that the emissions stuff is on there and it works for x number of miles.

Yeah, I thought all the emissions equipment was mandated my the EPA to have a 80k warranty.

Re: Secondary Air Injection Pump Replaced! (AlphaPepper)

I've had two secondary air injection pumps replaced within the 15000 miles. The first was covered under warranty (22 k miles). At 36k I got a CEL, but no loud noises like the first time. Diagnostics showed that the pump, as well as the combination valve and vacuum switching valve needed to be replaced. The dealer didn't have the combi valve in stock, and I was moving across the country the next day so they replaced the pump and switching valve and sent me on my way, only charging 80 bucks (for labor, they said even though I had surpassedc the B2B and 12month/12000 mileage warranty on the original part that they would cover it

. When I got to Salt Lake the dealer here replaced the combi valve for @ $140. They too cut me a deal, I think the part alone costs more than that. Interestingly, they said that when they were working on the system, they found moisture/water in the pump housing (enough to pour out). According to the tech I talked to, this was the 6th time in recent months that he has found water/condensation/etc in the pump housing on a passat. I called VWoA to voice my concern/check to see if there have been any bulletins/etc but they just acted like I was speaking another language. Knock on wood, 10000 miles and no problems as of yet...

I found this on EPA's website http://www.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/warr95fs.txt:

"For 1995 and newer model year vehicles, emission control and
emission related parts are warranted for the first 2 years or 24,000
miles of vehicle use. Specified major emission-control components are
warranted for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use."

Only the cat, ECU, and OBD computer are considered "major emission-control components."

Hi,

I have a 2000 1.8T and had my secondary air pump replaced under warranty at 18k after it made the jet engine sounds.

Recently, at about 38k I started hearing the noise again. I took it back and they said nothing was wrong with it. Now at 43k it doesn't even come on and I got a CEL and Emissions Workshop. I even had an issue where the headlights and instrument lights dimmed on a cold startup, like it was straining to turn the blower.

I hope that i can get VW to replace this under the 80k EPA mandated warranty!

What's wrong with VW these days?

Other recent problems I've had:
Mass Airflow Sensor went bad
Coolant Sensor went bad
Vacuum hoses breaking

The secondary injection pump has known issues...if you guys are having failing pumps, you need to get the combi valve replaced FIRST, or the good pump you install will get Fubar'd too!

here is a "tech tip" circulated by audi:

"In the event you have an A4 1.8T with engine code ATW with the DTC of 16795 - Secondary Air Injection system, Incorrect flow Detected, a leaking Combination valve could be the problem. A leaking valve causes exhaust gas to enter the secondary air system. The water from exhaust condensation travels through the entire secondary air injection system and if the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius the water will freeze. In most cases the water causes the air pump to corrode. Inspecting the combination valve will reveal the problem. If the Intake side of the valve is black, exhaust has entered the secondary air injection system. "

Had the same issue. Mine started making the noise (and still does) and the CEL went on. The dealer changed the vacuum hoses for $180 (ouch!) and the CEL went away.

I've read the 2000's had bad KONI valves and it is allowing water into the air pump and ruining the bearings. I hope I don't have my Passat when it finally goes or maybe it'll go out the same time I get timing belt replaced.

Can anyone who has replaced the secondary air injection system components offer any "how to" tips? Removing the bumper skin to get at the 3 bolts that hold the air pump housing bracket in place seems like the hardest part. :( There is not an easier way? :???:

Its been eons since I've done one, but I've NEVER pulled a bumper cover to do it on a Passat.

Plastic bends....hint hint hint.....

That's nice to know, the damn Haynes manual would have you pulling the front of the car apart !!

Ya, I wish I could remeber my trick(s). I'll be at the shop tomorrow doing a timing belt on my mom's car, so if I get the chance I'll look at a Passat to remember how I do it and then tell you guys.

hmm, check your state emissions laws, in MA it is 50k miles on all parts because we have to have "Nort East/CA" emissions, this is what the extra fees are for at purchase. I thought NY was lumped in this group as well.

FWIW a co-worker paid $650 for the same service

From the epa warranty page: http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt
Air pump is not one of the covered parts.

There are three specified major emission control components,
covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995
and newer vehicles:

* Catalytic converters.

* The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU).

* The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD).
