Rough start when engine is cold, then fine once warm

I have been noticing lately that when I start my car when the engine is cold, it has some trouble turning over but eventually does start up. When the weather gets colder, it has even more trouble. It's getting to the point now when it's cold that I'll almost have to try twice to start it.

But once the engine is warm and I have been driving for a while, if I try to start it, it goes right away and has no troubles at all. Do you any of you have a clue what this could be?

I have a couple guesses but am not sure, might be a fuel issue for not having enough fuel in the lines to start up initially, but once it's been running and fuel has been moving, it's easier. Maybe a fuel pump or filter issue...I dunno. Please give any input if you can. Thanks.

have you done all routine maintenance/ tuning to the car... seems simple to say but a dirty fuel filter will do it, might as well just replace if not already done so. also new spark plugs. Could also run fuel injector cleaner through the car with only a 1/2 or 1/4 tank or gas (even though it recommends use with a full tank). check battery life.. or have it charged at a pep-boys (did mine for free). works with ur problem because the battery will also get warm with use and make it easier to start to the car after being driven, once cold, needs to work harder. Again, you may have done this stuff already, but not posted it. good luck :)

Bump this up again, would like to get some more input on this...

Could it be something with clogged injectors, or a bad fuel filter, or bad coilpacks...please give me some input.

Also started to notice under WOT...it seems to be running a bit rough around full boost, could this be misfiring in one of the coilpacks? Just doesn't feel as smooth as it should be, kind of a vibration almost inside the engine...

How old is your battery? It sounds like the CCA (cold cranking amps not up to capacity) is inadequate if the battery has worn down. Check the battery voltage after you have driven it a while and it's fully charged. Then check voltage the next morning when the battery is cold. Tassap's suggestion of taking it to an auto parts store that can check battery condition is right on. Make sure you can reset the radio codes and maybe have the codes checked at the same time.

There could be a current drain (dark current) when the car is off, but just the age of the battery could be the culprit.

codes?

is the CEL on?

In my case, it's throwing code P0116 which points to a faulty Coolant Temp Sensor. Right at this time the engine became difficult to start. Cold or hot ... it didn't matter. It turns over fine, so the battery is fine. It got so bad once that it threw P03xx codes (misfire in all cylinders) like ecu wasn't being told to fire the plugs.

I have a sensor on order from parts4vws.com ... hopefully it's the fix.

If you're in Minnetonka, the temps have been cold enough to have a drastic effect on a battery that's marginal. My bet is that you need a new battery. One of these cold mornings turn on the headlights and have someone watch while you crank. If the headlights dim badly or go out, your battery is toast.
