Couldn't find any posts regarding this belt (just timing belt). I need to replace my V-belt, is this a difficult procedure? If it's something the not so mechanically inclined (me) can do, what are the steps for removing/installing?

Thanks in advance.

LOL.....take it to the dealer!!!!! I have done two now and that is two to many. Its a PITA and I now have to pay the same $$$ plus the 400.00 in parts to DIY...just pay for it and get the warr for the work. The 1.8Ts aren't that bad and the V6 is not that bad but you better have the right tools and if you are asking this question you don't.

dont know if its as hard to get too ,but i had my indi. mech.replace it at the same time the TB job belt was done .its usually replaced when TB is replaced, along w/waterpump and everything else associated with the repairs labor involved during a TB job

Thanks guys.

-pson, what parts are required? What else needs to be done other than removing the fan and loosening the tension element?

-turbo 8283, I was under the impression that the V-belt needs to be replaced more often than the timing belt. So you had your's replaced after 60,000+ miles (assuming when you replaced your timing belt)?

You don't need to remove anything but the belt. Swinging out the lock carrier would make it easier, but not worth the time on this job (unless you have big gorilla arms). It's fairly easy. You put a wrench on the tensioner, turn it and slip a drill bit, punch or allen wrench in the locking hole. Getting the top of the belt off is easy. The bottom pulleys are a bit trickier (especially the alternator) as there are lines running in front of them. Getting the belt on is much easier than removing it, so if you get frustrated just cut it. Oh, another thing. If you don't have a manual and your memory is bad, draw a picture of the routing!

BTW- Don't be too concerned about small cracks on the old belt where it runs across a pulley "upside-down". They are normal. If there are any areas where ribs are missing or any fraying on the edge, change the belt.

There is no scheduled replacement of the v-belt or ribbed belts. Just inspections at 40k intervals. Since the cost of these belts are minimal, most people will change them when they replace the timing belt. As TMP says replace is you see missing ribs or the belt starting to fray. Otherwise, there is really no need to replace the ribbed belt.

I am sorry about that I was think TB right away....if you are taking about a sep belt that is easy...you just take a 17mm socket and put it on the ten and push down the belt will just fall off. Then pull the old one out and put the new one in:thumbup: It does take a few wigles to get the old and new belt under the AC lines

pson - I assumed you thought I was talking timing belt. I wouldn't touch that one myself, no way.

I'll take a good look over the v-belt this weekend.

Thanks again.
Also you may not have to change the TB the same time I got my sept belt replaced and my TB looked good(another 10 to 20k left) So its up to you....when you have the sept belt off(look at the 1.8T TB write up for the sept its about the same) take the upper right corner TB cover off there is 3 clips to pop and you can move it easy. Take a look at the TB to see what you need done.
