Removing the Drive Axle Bolt?

Is there any trick to removing the main drive axle bolt for the front driver side of a 1.8t automatic?

I have tried a impact wrench with 500ft-lbs torque and standing on the breaker bar.

I am considereing buying another impact wrench with 750ft-lbs torque; do you think this will do the job?

For anyone who has tackled this job I appreciate your input.

I bought some 18" galvanized steel pipe from Lowe's and placed it over the end of a monster 17mm Allen wrench (I believe 1.8t is 14mm?). I think a 1/2" ID pipe fits almost perfectly with little play.

Stood on the end and bounced until it came loose. If you're a wee little girly man, you might try 24" just to be safe :D

It's one of my least favorite jobs on the Passat. Even worse is putting the new drive bolt in..!!

Anyway, I removed my axle drive bolt by using a 1/2" breaker bar (do not use a ratchet) and a 4' foot section of plumbers metal pipe from Menards. Lots of persuasion by standing on the breaker bar and rocking up and down on it and the axle bolt eventually broke loose.

You can probably get more force by pulling up on the breaker bar, especially if you don't weight much and standing on the bar doesn't apply a ton of force. Just be careful not to wrench your back..!!

Yep, 6' of schd 80 3/4" black gas pipe from your local orange borg, slip it over the end of the allen wrench or breaker bar handle, use slow but steady pressure so if it lets loose you don't end up hitting something with the end of the pipe.

I have 4' of black pipe, but yea, this. it should break loose. I'm not a big guy, but I have no problem doing these myself.

I finally found the 17mm tool I needed. AutoZone had a 12-15-17 mm allen set that fit 1/2 in drive for @ $12.
a 18in pipe and off they came.

Now if I can just get out the bottom strut bolt.
you'll need two 18mm - one a socket/ratchet, and the other a wrench (at a minimum). I use a dead-blow hammer to tease the bolt most of the way out, then a ratchet extension with the dead blow.
