DO IT!!! I would if I had the $$ just 'cause. I've been thinking a 6speed quattro Passat would be slick... yeah, I could buy an A4 but, I could drop a 4.2 in and confuse the hell out of everyone!!

Wow, buy a very high mileage cheap 4motion passat, swap it with these parts... damn... the 4.2 non FSI engine is a beast, and rock solid. if i had a garage, i'd seriously consider this, not just ponder it...

And just how bad are W8's ??
im comparing it to my 1.8t. seems like you need to pull the motor to fix anythng. dont get me wrong, im not bad mouthing the the car. i would do almost anything to have a w8, they are the most fun to drive cars i think i have ever driven. im just saying i can afford to buy one, just not maintain one

The only thing you have to pull the motor for my friend is the timing chain since it's on the back of the motor....
Engine does not have to be pulled to change front O2 sensors as everyone has claimed. I'm a VW service advisor. My guys have replaced both in less than 90 minutes with a "shop-designed tool" :)

Last one that was done here was: A. Done before I started working here and B. Warranty. As I posted in an earlier thread that I created 2 months ago, if it were a CASH repair, YES I would have passed on the savings. Please don't attempt charecter assinations with me. I'm unlike ANY service advisor you've ever, or WILL ever, deal with... :censored:

Yes I'm serious
Would it be possible to fit the Audi 4.2 V8 into a B5/.5 Passat? I mean, Audi was able to fit it into the B6 A4 which has about the same size engine bay as the Passat so I don't see why this couldn't work. So, what do you guys think?
I think VW went to the effort (expense) of designing & fitting the W8 for a reason... there's just not enough room in the engine bay for two rows of four cyliners. The extra 2-or-so inches in the A6 may make all the difference.

You'd probably have to modify the front firewall. Plus, the B5.5 chassis is reinforced on the W8's to handle the larger weight engine -- you'd certainly want to make the same improvements to the "donor recipient".

You guys seem to be convinced that the W8 needs to be pulled for everything...

TIMING CHAIN! THAT'S IT! And seeing as how it is a double timing chain (like a racecar, not a freaking belt like you 1.8T owners), it won't need to be removed until 100K miles. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not exactly expendable just because my car has 275 horsepower. Agh. ;)

I don't beleive it would be an easy swap, seeing as how the B6 Audi chassis is quite different than our B5 chassis. If it was similar, why do you think VW would waste their time and MONEY!!! on developing the W8 engine. Granted, it was experimental to determine if W arrangments would work, but they most likely would have gone for the simple, proven, high power V8. I am surprised that Audi could fit that monster in there, but hey, they're magical.

Anyway, money can work wonders. People put VR6 engines in MK1 and MK2 Golfs all the time, as well as rear-engined 1.8T's, so anything is possible with the right credit rating and a 60 hour work week. ;)

On another note, look at how restrictive the header primaries are! I'm betting you could see a 10 HP gain right there...

I could be full of BS...........

When the 4.2 was sandwiched into the '02+ S4, I thought I'd read somewhere that Audi tweaked the engine to get it to fit into the engine bay........relocated the timing chain, etc etc.

Are all 4.2s the same, or is there an S4 specific version that would better lend itself to a Passat swap? (I realize this specific Ebay link is for an S4 motor, just wondered if there was a difference).

That'd be a hell of a car, for sure;)

It would be all well and good to swap the 4.2 into a Passat and I would applaud anyone who did it. But if you're going to swap the engine out you might as well go with a 2.7T, less weight and more power, you can't go wrong with that.
