Passat B5.5 1.9TDI - Heavy vibration after knock.

Evening All,
I own a Passat B5.5 1.9TDI Highline (130) with around 170K (Miles) on the clock. I purchased the car around a month ago, and all has been great. I have blanked the EGR as well as giving it a clean for good measure and have had a nice little remap on the car pushing around 160 BHP and a lot of torque, although this is all yet to be confirmed on the Dyno.

Unfortunately and stupidly, I hit a low lying brick wall this evening :banghead:. Cosmetically the damage isn't too bad; the front grille is cracked and dislodged, although I managed to fix this. The outside temperature wire to the sensor has been severed, as the wall pierced my under tray, this I'm not too concerned with. My real issue is that my Passat has now developed a horrible vibration within the car. Upon inspecting the damage (in poor light) it looks like I have damaged some sort of support. I'm not sure what the name of the part is but it is a section of black metal that connects/slots into the main chassis from what i can tell. The car is right-hand drive, so the damage is on the right side if looking from the front. The car still drives ok, no loss of power but as I said there is a horrendous vibration within the cabin.

I am a little worried now, and would like to know the name of the part, and if this is a big job to fix.

Any help or input is greatly appreciated.

Upon further reading, I think i have damaged the front anti roll bar. With a dent in the anti roll bar, could this cause such vibrations?

EDIT: I stand corrected, nothing to do with the ARB as that is further back. It looks like the SMIC bracket/pipe that I have damaged. I have attached a picture, see just below the yellow arrow.

that bar may or may not be damaged. I'll leave that up to you to figure out. What is most likely causing the vibration is the front engine mount shifted and the engine vibration is being transmitted through that bar and into the chassis. I would try re-centering the front engine mount first.

To do this the belly pan must be off (doesn't sound like a problem since yours is damaged).

The car must be resting on all four tires on level ground. You have to loosen the the 3 bolts holding the aluminum front mount to the lower engine block. With the bolts about hand or light wrench tight (not loose, but not torqued) start the engine and let the car run for a little. This allows the engine to center itself on the mounts. Now you can either re-torque the bolts while the car is still running or shut the car off and re-torque them. If the car is running be mindful of the moving parts. I have done it both ways. One time I was concerned with it shutting off in center so I torque them from below with a torque wrench. I did this on a 1.8T AWM.

I suggest picking up a Bentley service manual. You will need it if you have to replace the bar and it will come in handy incase you need to move other parts out of the way to gain clearance to the mount bolts.
