Passat Alarm question because my car got broken into

Hello fellow owners,

I've recently returned from vacation from Saturday 6/30 to Wednesday 7/4, and when I decided to drive my 03 Passat GLS into work today (rather than take light rail), I noticed that all the stuff in my glovebox was left on the floor. This was curious because normally I'm pretty clean.

I then noticed things missing, apparently someone broke into my car. As far as I can tell, they made off with my Passport 8500 x50, an external hardrive/media card reader, a digital air pressure gauge, and an emergency credit card that I left in my car for gas in case I forgot my wallet.

I have a couple of questions though, as far as I can tell, my car wasn't broken into, there are no broken windows, and my lock mechanism didn't seem screwed up (ala screw drive in lock method). I'd imagine that I lock my car 99% of the time, but I might have forgotten this time (though I doubt it). Does our stock alarm automatically lock the car after a certain amount of time after the car is sitting? Also, how else would they have gotten into the car otherwise? I have all 3 keys in my posession.

I've cancelled all the credit cards, but how much is it worth filing a police report and is it worth filing an insurance claim against any of these? Also, is there anything else I should do? I've also put a fraud alert with the credit reporting agencies. Thanks for viewing and any help you may provide.

make a police report .. it will bring the statistic of crime in your area up so that they will increase patrols there more often ..

i bet it was that radar detector that was mounted on your windshield that attracted the thieves .....:hmmm:

I would absolutely file a police report for anything like this. Doesn't sound like there'd be much reason to go through auto insurance, since it would only cover damage to the car itself. Your homeowner's or renter's probably covers your possessions while they're in the car, so that might be worth looking into.

Meh, make sure you want to do this. Our homeowner's policy is very sensitive to incidents. I filed our one and only homeowner's claim when a large tree on our property was struck by lightning. We were told, in no uncertain terms, that if we submitted another claim in the next 3 years for any event, they'd cancel us. This is with no prior claim history and after having been with the carrier in excess of 10 years...

Yea the car notifies me that the alarm has gone on and gone off. I hear the beep when I engage the car lock/alarm. My radar detector was stored in the cubby hole near the steering column to the left. It was out of sight but apparently not somewhere safe enough...

The sad thing is that I live 2 blocks away from the Sheriff's department and 100 feet from a middle school, so cops actually patrol there often...

At least I don't feel nearly as bad as I thought I would (first time this has happened to me). I'm just a bit bitter that I wasn't smarter and locked the glove with my credit card.

It just makes me antsy that my credit card was stolen, and I lost a whole bunch of "expensive stuff" and my car didn't make a peep. I'm just confused as to 1) I didn't lock the car, and it's all my fault, or 2) the car was broken into without someway of me noticing afterwards. The first is bad, the 2nd might be worse.

Does your Passport mount to the windshield with a suction cup? Is there a noticeable ring-imprint on your windshield because you always attach it in the same place?

Thieves look for these sort of things. (That's how my cousin lost his portable nav unit ...someone saw the suction cup ring, busted the passenger's window, leaned in, opened the glovebox and - presto - bye-bye navigation.)

Maybe I missed this, but was the car locked or unlocked when you went to drive it?

Also, I wouldn't blame yourself for not locking the glove box - it's not like it's really going to protect your stuff. I think mine would open itself if a thief gave it a good stern look...

My theory:
Your door lock mechanism might be screwed up
Did you 100% verify that your driver's door lock pin was down?
If the door lock mechanism is failing, when you press the lock button the drivers door will not lock. You ahve to lock it by hand.
Unfortunatly, it does this intermittantly so its hard to notice sometimes.
I think this happens because the car still thinks the drivers door is open and has this mechanism to prevnet lockouts.

If you unlock the doors and don't touch the handle for 30 seconds, it relocks. This is to prevent you from accidentally unlocking as you leave. If you open the door, though, I don't believe it will ever relock itself.

As for whether or not it's worth filing a homeowner claim, I'd bet it's not worth it. Hence "may want to look into"... :)

After my car was broken into 2 years ago I leave nothing of value in it...no loose change, no sunglasses, no registration or insurance cards (photocopies only)....it is a pain to always take it with you in my little bag but so be it....
