So i was driving down a state road at about 60 mph, when all of a sudden my car jerked twice, and just died. I had jumper cables and attempted to get jumped by another car, and the battery was giving off juice, but the car would not start. Because the car was trying to start up I dont believe my problem is with the battery, starter, or alternator. I have a 2005 1.8t passat with APR software, Cold Air Intake, Double DIN touchscreen tv, all white interior and headlights, and H&R sport springs. I dont know what the problem is... any help you guys have would be great.

Alternator and/or short somewhere. Good luck with that... I hate
diagnosing electrical.

for starters, i honestly don't believe that this could be the issue as he said there was a bit of rough ride described as a "jerk then died"
the engine jumped, then failed ignition.
leading to....
unclip top timing belt cover to see cam gear and turn over engine, no movement at cam, bad belt - and assorted repairs coming.

If it moves fine, pull out a coil, stick in a plug see if it fires. No, electrical.

Both of those oK check fuel pressure.

I vote for electrical. You didn't turn the TV on about then did you?:p
most cases, you don't even need to remove those covers as they could quite possibly have been whipped off, or melted/rub-burned through.
pz's lower pulley cover, that covers the tb was warped and torn through by his belt.

also, note cat fuz EVERYWHERE. sure sign of belt failure.

Well I have it at vw now, since the car still is under warranty, but I am hoping now that it is anything but an ECU problem because otherwise they may flash the chip so I lose the APR software and they may not cover it under warranty. I have 44000 miles on the car, does tht sound about right for a timing belt? If so, that would explain why the car came to pretty much a sudden hault.

Sounds very early for a timing belt, but it is possible. Hell with our cars anything is possible. If they do cover it and they erase the program, you should just have to pay labor to have the APR flashed back on since you already own the program. Check with APR just in case. My local tuner will reflash it for a small labor fee as long as it's the same car it was originally installed on. It really does sound like a TB though.

Maybe not

Sometime they just lose enough teeth to stop moving at the crank. His cars not that old. 2005

I am sure we will know soon enough.

Well the entire day went by and I heard nothing from them, Unfortunatly I dont have a garage here to work on the car so I had no choice but to send it to vw. I really hate having other people do work, but when I dont know what the problem is I have to just hope that w/e it is, is covered under warranty.

What do you guys think the probability is that this was caused by an ECU problem? At this point, that is really what i am concerned about being that they probaly will not cover that under the warranty.

I do not know the condition of the belt, I was so pissed off that this happened only 40 min into my roadtrip that I didnt think of anything it could be before I had a flatbed come and pick it up.
The only sound it made was when I tried to re-start it, it kind of sounded like the car wanted to turn on but wouldnt.

Ok well I have an update, not much, but an update nonetheless. I spoke to vw this morning and they said that nothing came up on the diagnostic test, the car shows power but will not start, and they claim to have checked the timing belt and said it was working fine.
At this point now I am back to square 1 and I am all out of guesses on what the problem could be. I am starting to think that maybe I got a bad tank of gas or something is clogging my injectors.

Sounds like something ignition/ECM related. If the fuel is cut off, it will stumble for short while before stalling out. When the ignition goes, it will die just like when the ignition switch is turned off. That's all I got.

Strange, that definitely didn't sound like a fuel pump problem. But then I recall when my Ford Ranger fuel gauge died (it's still dead BTW). Said I was full and I had just picked up the truck from my mom's house. Died halfway to my destination. It was lurching and dying and doing all sorts of weird stuff. Well after about 6 months and tons of diagnosing (I would work on the thing for like an hour at a time) turns out I was just out of gas.... Ouch. Found that out when I went to drop the gas tank to replace the fuel pump (in the tank) and realized the damn thing was empty. You would never think of that since the gauge would come up to full when you turn the key. Back to zero when it was off...

BTW, APR is encrypted and undetectable by the VW diagnostic equipment.
