Is there no control module at all on a 2001 Passat 1.8L? I went to Autozone to buy a new module because cylinder 3 is misfiring even after buying a new coil pack and they said the control modules were only for the 1998-1999 1.8L models.

2001 1.8T has a central engine control unit (computer), plus, as you know, a separate coil atop each spark plug.

Have you swapped the #3 spark plug with another? Have you swapped your new #3 coil with another?

If the problem is always #3, even after swapping plugs and coils, the wiring harness and its snap-on electrical connector are suspect. If those are all in good shape, then it could be the ECU, but I would eliminate spark plug, coil, and wiring before jumping to that conclusion.

Or fuel injector. Swap #3 with another and see if the misfire moves. I had a single cylinder misfire on my 2.8. New plugs didn't change anything, swapping plugs either, but switching injectors did. And the bad one clicked like normal and had the proper resistance.

Also check the coil connector. Mine was cracked internally allowing the wiring to pull away from the coil.
