NO HEAT - Help please. Is It Temp Flap Servo/Motor (68)?

Newbie/Noobe here,

This is a very useful site! Thank you All. I have been reading posts here for the last 3 months and decided to join after still experiencing my own set of issue on my 2001 Passat GSX 4 Motion. Picked this car up for free from a cousin who moved out of state and have been slowly getting it diagnosis-ed and running again (quite the learning curve).

I am a DIY guy, so I use my 45 years of fiddling on cars to fix issues myself as they have arisen in all of my cars over the years. Currently the Passat is giving absolutely no heat. both hoses going into the heater core are very hot equally. I would imagine if the heater core was the issue, or even air in the heater core/system, I would have at least a little bit of warm coming through, but absolutely nothing- all cold. After reading the Climatronic internal error readings from the face of the unit, I initially got codes;

214 Supply Voltage 00532 in VAG-com - Supply Voltage B+: Signal too Low
256 (could not find anything on this code)
4f7 Temp Flap Servo/Motor (68) = VAC-COM 01271
4f8 Central Flap Servo/motor (V 70) = VAC-COM 01272
4fa Recirculation Flap Servo/motor (V 71) = VAC –COM 01274
513 - Gateway = VAC-com 01299 - Diagnostic Interface for Data Bus (J533): No Communications

So I ran Climatronic diagnosis this time, and all codes cleared up except 513 - Gateway. I have done this several times and driven the car, still 513 only. (still no heat). On 513, • If the fault is only found in one control module, then most likely that module is the issue. However, if the fault is found several different control modules, then the CAN Gateway could be the issue.

I have read here that you can run the Vag-com set up from a lap top and perform the 'basic setting' (reset), and this will cycle the flap motors, if they are 'stuck' then this 'might' fix the issue. They run through their full deflections and relearn the end stop positions. The flapper servo/motors sometime lose their track of its 'home' position. So my questions are;

1. When I ran the Climatronic internal self diagnostics from the front of the unit, does this run it through the 'basic settings' (reset) and/or RE-learn the flapper positions? OR do i have to use a VAG-com to do this basic setting' (reset) or RE-learning process?

2. Question: Can I buy one of the cheaper VAG cables and software found on the internet, or does it have to be the Ross-Tech cable and software? Why?

My feeling after chasing this problem down a bit, is that it is Temp Flap Servo/Motor (68) that is faulty, because i get absolutely no warm ever. That means that door (temperature Flap Servo motor (68) is totally NOT moving and is stuck in the cold position. I do hear the other doors opening and closing on the dash, floor, defrost and re circulation settings, but no temperature change at all, just cold all the time.

Any insight, and experience would be very very helpful.

Sad to say, if the Climatronic diagnostics only return code 513, then the flap is probably not the reason for no heat.

The heater cores are prone to clogging on these cars, particularly if non-pink coolant (i.e. any common US stuff) has been used. (G12, the pink VW coolant, is incompatible with US coolant, e.g. green. When mixed, it makes a brown goop perfect for clogging heater cores.)

The heater core has a bypass channel, so the hoses can be hot and your toes still cold. Sometimes you may get a little heat on the highway, where the engine is running faster.

There are a plethora of threads about heater core flushing. Changing the heater core is a project: remove dash and everything under it; the last part you get to is the heater core.

If you take out the dash replace what's under there. My 99 Passat is being sold to my brother because the AC evaporate is shot. He will get that done and replace the heater core as well. No sense wasting all that labor.
