I noticed all the rave about the new Turbo Diesel about to comeout, and noticed its 234 lb./ft. torque from 134 hp, are we still faster w/ more horses? In a 0-60mph dash, will they head up first then we catch on w/ our 1.8T?

We can't get it in CA anyway :(

I have a chipped Golf TDI and a chipped 1.8T Variant, on a 0-60 the Passat takes off and never looks back.

The high-torque low-power thing doesn't really work for 0-60 times... it's more effective at low RPMs. My Golf can go up a steep hill in first without touching the go-pedal, that's only about 1000 RPM!

Ugh!! I looked ont he website...and all I found was a 2.0L TDI. Presumably a bored/stroked 1.9L. 134HP, ~240 ft-lbs of torque. FWD only. I was hoping for the 2.5L TDI w/4-Motion in a wagon. That might convince me to sell my sporty little 1.8T sedan, but not a 2L-FWD. Even though I'd have to buy it out of state for 6 mos or so, too! Maybe next year...

Renato's right: crank torque is not meaningful for predicting vehicle acceleration. Horsepower is all that counts. The gearing of a TDI relative to its powerband is much shorter, so it can actually output more power from, say, 0-10mph. After that, it's all over and the higher-powered gasoline cars will smoke it, no problem.

Right, I'm not knocking the TDIs either. Just making sure people know that there is no black magic and therefore the diesels really are slower and it really is as simple as the power figures. I'm sure a chipped TDI Passat will be easy to make at least as fast as a stock 1.8T without any trouble, and still return highway mpg in the 40s.

It sucks that the TDI Passats all come in auto though. Would like to test out a stick with that engine.
