New antenna install (shark fin) problem - no stations

I recently bought a used shark fin from a PW member. When I did the install I discovered that the cable on the shark fin was just about an inch to short to reach the cable in the car. ______ ______ No bueno, right? So I went and bought another on from DubStop hoping the next one was long enough. It is! :D The two pieces connect, however the reception is down right terrible. If I stand outside of the car and physically place my hand on the antenna itself I can get a station and it's gone as soon as I remove my hand. Same thing goes for when I am holding the connection under the roof while I was installing. That is the only station I can manage to get...

Am I doing, or did I do something incorrectly?? I was unable to get the nut to thread on the post with the spacer piece in place (the crown with the plastic lining) so I am just using the nut. Is it because the wire is touching the nut and not the plastic I couldn't use?

Any help is appreciated. I have read a few threads on this and didn't find the info I was hoping for so I did use the Holy Search function.

Thanks,

Mike

A short antenna without a powered wire to boost its signal acquisition is weak. I have a 2 inches stubby antenna and the reception is very weak and I'm planning to put back my original one. Although you've got the good looks of it but performance wise it doesn't do its job in terms of providing a good signal strength to your HU.

Mike, I haven't seen the guts inside either sharkfin you installed, but I'd be willing to wager there's no preamp in it. without the preamp (or with a dead preamp), you have almost no FM or AM reception.
