I swear the car must know I'm getting rid of it so today, it decided it won't shift into 1st or Reverse. The whole week it was working fine but today, in 102 deg. heat something didn't feel right; very spongy feeling in the shifter; next thing I find out, I can't get it into first anymore. If I hold it hard into the 1st gear position, I get a little grind and then a thunk into first and then it takes. But it's more not than often. I'm almost wondering if it's clutch related if my tranny has finally decided to go out with a bang!

I'm pissed; I was going to get it "smog-checked" only but now I can't even get it into gear.

I'm in a rock in a hard place. I do want to get a new car but timing sucks!!!!!! I wanted to at least try the new A4 (I still will but just can't buy it right now; not till about Sept.). I could easily just donate the Passat and write it off, trade it in "as is" (vibration and all), or just succumb to repairing it for the next few weekends which I'm thinkng... NOT!

There is a plan C: just buy a mid-sized fuel efficient car that will transfer to my 16 year old daughter when she's old enough to finally drive it herself. This would be an interim fix and would save me a lot of headaches. I have to talk it over with the wife first.

There is of course, the A5.....

Wow! You and I are in the same boat. I think my car knows too :nervous:

I don't know if you read any of my posts, but I too am looking to get the A4. My car just developed an exhaust leak right before I went on vacation and my tranny has been slipping more lately :hmmm:

I just got back from visiting my Dad in San Clemente. It's beautiful out there. Virtually no rain except in the winter months and sunny every day  However, I do think I would miss the rain and thunderstorms we get here in NJ. I just love extreme weather.

I kinda had the opposite experience. I finally got totally sick of my Passat, and just started driving it like it was my bitch (and not vice-versa ;)), all the while researching a purchase of a Nissan Altima, and eventually I realized the car had been giving me absolutely no trouble at all the whole time. So I decided to save my money for now.

Then the battery died.

I don't neglect my car. It's old and is in need of some work. I am not in a position to spend the time and money on the list of things that need attention. If I had bought the car new, it would be differerent. With 95k on the car when I bought it in 2002, it's hard to determine the cars history other then knowing it had the oil changed and was mostly highway driven. I think it may have been hit in the rear and I was thinking it may be the reason the paint on the trunk is bubbling

My car had best behave if it wants to stick around. I take good care of it (apart from washing/waxing) but it should know it is on shaky ground after the engine rebuild. :wrench:

my old b5 did that, when i first put it on for sale on the net,the n75 solenoid and ignition relay and a leaking vaccum hoses decided to crop up out of nowhere! then the car kept going into limp mode, found out another 25 quid relay had gone! and before that, never had a problem with it for the 2 years i owned it

but even so,i still miss the baby, probably because it was my first ever car

hope you get it sorted herman, and keep the car in the family

it's sorted out all right! Getting it towed and donated on Wed.

Just so you know too, there are other things wrong. I just don't have the inclination anymore to take care of possibly 8 control arms (2nd time ), peeling JT wood trim, and now the tranny.

I don't think it's clutch. It's not slipping, but just not engaging and that even when the motor is OFF. I made a bunch of adjustments thinking it all happened after the short shifter was removed; I got back 1 - 5 and reverse for one round; then it just started up again - no first, barely 2nd, but reverse seemed to still be ok. If this was clutch, this problem would arise on all 6 gates.

Final parting out will happen tonight with any luck. Last things to remove/swap back to OEM: ECU, Headlamps, fuel pressure gauge w/steering column mount, CF hood, stereo reinstall (the donation place wanted that in if possible), OEM grille. Yesterday, I took all the "junk out of the trunk" ... literally. cleared out all the storage areas in the cabin as well. Still unsure but the Turbo Timer I might be able to get out before they come and take it away.... I'm leaving the K&N; it was looking a little ratty after the last clean-up anyway.

ZACK: Thanks for the offer buddy. Hey, need a CF hood???? :D :D :D

See my other post "Hasta La Vista Baby!".
