I've got a 99' Passat with the 1.8T, and I un hooked the battery last night in an attempt to reset the computer because my car was shifting rather hard, the tiptronic wouldn't work either-

Thinking that unhooking the battery to fix it was obviously a mistake, because now the car starts, idles, and ANY kind of throttle instantly kills the engine.. Is there -any- inexpensive fix for this? is the only solution the VAG COM?

thanks in advance-

turn the key to the on position but do not start the car and let it sit for a few minutes, listen to the throttle body and when it stops making any noise start the car up you should be fine. do not touch the throttle pedal or the throttle cable or the throttle body at any time during the process

VAGCOM, but this has never failed on any 99 that I've done it on. you might wanna pull the battery cable for 10 minutes before hand to reset the ECU and then follow procedure i said above once you reconnect the battery

well.. it failed.

disconnected the battery for 10 minutes, tried to start the car, fired, idled like ass, stalled, started it again.. idled for a good 5 minutes.. died. started it again.. let it idle away, gave it very very slight throttle and RPM's rose to around 1200 and it stalled out..

dont really have the funds for a VAGCOM program right now..

Well you have three options.

1. Use the VagCom locator to find someone close to you with a VagCom. http://www.frappr.com/vagcomlocator

2. Buy a cheap Ebay VagCom cable and download the VagCom freeware. Then upgrade online for $99 to the full licensed version. See this thread - http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=271037

3. Get it towed to a VW dealer and have them do a TBA. This will cost more than option 2.

John

p.s. Where are you located. Many people here have vagcom's, someone might be close and willing to help.

TCU has problems. check wiring and connections. Is your carpet wet?

#16 ·
yes but none of this started till after i took out a fuse the tranny then messed up so i reset my computer by disconnecting the battery and when i put it back together it wont run and just keeps stalling and where is the tcu located and abs module and the ecu is under the hood right

#18 ·
drivers side is the CCM, check your passenger side floor as well thats where the TCU is located.

and did you leave the hood popped and wait for the throttle body to stop making noise?

#19 ·
yes but i didn't leave the door open for the intire time i closed it and would open it to start the car the passenger side is dry as can be but the driver side is soaked due to the resent rain and the plugged up drains under the battery

You can buy one of these cables,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Automotive-Tools__USB-Vag-Com-Cable-Interface-Scanner-VW-Audi-VagComOBD2_W0QQitemZ370084356135QQadnZAutomotiveQ20ToolsQQadiZ2871QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item370084356135&_trkparms=39%3A1|65%3A1|240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

They will ship a software disk along with the cable. After you successfully get your PC or laptop communicating with your Passat, you can go online and purchase a license code for $99 with your credit card. You then just type in the code and your software becomes fully functional.

Here is how to do the throttle body adaptation.

Remember to clear your fault codes prior to doing the TBA or it won't work.

It include a link to the free version of 409.1 . Remember to use the drivers you get with the cable, not the drivers from Ross Tech. Here are the installation details.

After you get the free version working, then you can go here and purchase the license.

Don't purchase the license until you get the freeware version running....

Concerning Sport mode, I don't know if you can do that with the 99 AEB. You'll have to ask someone else that question. Here are some things you can do.
