umm, i'm getting ready to put the bumper cover back on and i have two t45 bolts leftover that i can't figure out where they go. i have nine t45 bolts overall and used seven to them to secure the lock carrier, leaving me scratching my head over the remaining two. what am i missing?

Actually, there is 4 on one side and only 3 on the other (the driver side iirc). I know, weird.

They are too big for that.

@stanwebber do you have another VW or Audi around or made a trip to the junk yard recently? I cannot find another use for that specific bolt anywhere on the front end other than the 7 for the lock carrier. Unless someone used them for the crash bar as well, but those are longer.

Three Phillips head screws with captive washers on the right. Left is either T25 or Phillips head with a very wide head.
Bottom is a wide head with a thicker shaft about 15mm long and then threaded the rest of the length.

Red circle - QTY 2 Left and right sides - T30 hex bit with a large washer
Yellow circles - QTY 3 - usually Phillip's heads with a washer attached
Blue circle - QTY 11 - T30 hex bit - slightly smaller washer/flange than the ones in the red circle.

Bolt in blue circle - one here and same location on drivers side.

Same as the bolts above - T30 hex bolt - plus another QTY of 4 under the bumper cover, attaches the plastic bracing to the radiator core support that holds the bumper cover.

ok thanks, that syncs with what I have, especially the part about the 11 blue bolts all being the same. so now there's only 2 fasteners unaccounted for: the 2 holes on the underside of the bumper cover. i have no fasteners leftover except the big t45 bolts. are these holes underneath the bumper also attachment points for the splash shield which my car is missing?

Sorry I was going from memory on the size of those screws up top. Andreas shows the correct ones

I have not seen a Passat with all 8 of those bolts. I don't recall seeing any other T45 bolts with the same washers used on a Passat. There are T45 bolts used on the trans, but not with those washers. If you had 9, either someone pranked you (it was not me, but I've done it before), someone dropped 2 in bumper cover and they fell out when you removed it, or someone used the wrong bolts the last time it was apart.

well, I tracked down the source of those extra bolts and it was me. I found them listed on a dealership parts invoice with other fasteners, but I have no earthly recollection as to why I wanted 2 or any of them. in any case i put 1 in the driver's side empty hole and the other in the junk drawer.

now I have a new mystery leftover fastener. i had been running without my belly pan, but decided to put it back on today since i acquired a 60pc set of all the sundry fasteners. when it was time to attach the center 10mm nut/washer I found this rather distinctive bolt threaded thru it:
103934

103935

I must have thought they belonged together when I had the car apart in service position, but the nut/washer combo clearly fits on the stud sticking down in the center just behind the bumper. the leftover fastener is clearly not a generic bolt and with that familiar green finish it had to come from the car, but where?

Triple squares are pretty rare, I've mostly seen them on axle flanges to the trans. I don't recall ever seeing one for service position or the timing belt on a B5.5 1.8T and I've done tons of them. Anything else you had apart?

nothing else apart ever since moving to this garage. I had all the screws grouped on the floor and set aside in the sequence I removed them. if the bolt got knocked and migrated a bit it would still probably be from a group early on in the process. (I did leave the car sitting apart for a couple years.) what about something to do with the hood latch (most writeups show removing this)? as I recall I left the latch assembly in place and only removed the plastic release pull with a flat bladed screwdriver. maybe I started on the latch assembly and changed course?

also, the car was put into service position to install a primary electric cooling fan (not timing belt) so the associated belts, pulleys and bearings are in play.

a 10mm nut fits the threads and I believe the bolt is also 10mm, but I will confirm it next chance I get.

I only recall 1 area with that distinctive green finish: the massive bolts/nuts attaching the inner bumper to the frame horns and also the small nuts holding the same bumper "arms" to the radiator support when the t45 bolts are removed. I've also seen the t45 bolts with that green finish in writeups, but mine (and the ones from the dealership) are silver. is the green finish just happenstance?

the only other vehicle that has ever even been parked in this garage is a 66 Ford mustang so a dead end there.
