Hey guys, so i was driving around today and im just about at 49k miles. I stop to gas up and the next thing i know i look down and see the engine light on

any idea what this could mean? Thankfully i didnt notice anything, like mechanical parts breaking... just looked down and the light was on. I pulled off into a parking lot stopped let the car sit for a bit and checked under the hood.. everything seemed and looked fine. I started the car up and it was a little hesitant to start. I started to drive and immediatly noticed it was alot slower to accelerate and it seemed slow to shift and always felt like it was in the wrong gear.

I have a B5.5 02' V6 Tip I have been driving the car a little hard the past 2k miles... could I have thrown the timing belt off? I dont really know crap under the hood so i cant really diagnose the problem... though ive read that the timing belt is the big thing to go around now right?

let me know what you guys think what the problem is tommarow ill take it to the shop. If this is a timing belt issue, is it better to take this to the dealer? or should I go to the Indy shop i usually head to?

Thanks in advance guys!

dosent sound like the timing belt. The check engine light coming on could mean a bunch of different things from having a loose gas cap to a more serious problem. Have the codes pulled and post them here for additional help or have your mechanic take a look.

Well depending on how much time you have left on your warranty... it doesn't hurt to take it to the dealer before the Bumper to Bumper warranty goes out. It should be 4 years or 50,000 miles. Hopefully you fall withing both!

I am curious, what do you mean by codes and how do you find these?
when something goes wrong with the car(check engine light), the computer throws out a code.. you can see the code number with a special tool. Dealer usually a lot for it. You can buy the cable on ebay for 10$. Search for "USB VagCom" and check the codes yourself

The "Check Engine Light", (a.k.a. "Malfunction Indicator Lamp" in VW-ese) can mean a lot of different things. The most common way to trigger one is a loose gas cap, but it can be anything from that to impending engine doom. There is no way to tell just by looking under the hood.

When the car turns on the MIL, the car's computer has posted a code in its internal logs. Go to an AutoZone, and request that they "pull codes" for you. They will plug a little gadget into your car (into the connector underneath the driver's dash) then give you some codes, (i.e. P1044). Post them here, and we can tell you if you need to make a trip to the dealer or not.

ok so the code is Po441 - Evap emissions control failure

doesnt sound like i should be as worried as I should be... correct me if im wrong though

hmm thanks for the gtg invite but I just got an apointment for my baby to go into the shop thursday. I can reschedule the appt but id rather not drive 45mins with my car in it's condition. Is there a list of whos going or a thread somewhere? last one i went to... the hooters gtg kinda fell through where me and (i think it was flipped) were the only ones to show up :thumbdown :(

let me know im definatly interested tho

thanks again for all the responses

did a search for the P0441 code and it sounds like a lot of people have had this same problem...

looks like a purge valve failure... first thing tommarow ill check it and the hoses i guess

i went the indy shop route and I have an appointment for thursday... now im thinking if I should go the stealership route on this one.

Not sure if my warranty is up, i bought it used at least 2 years ago i will have to check my files though.

If the culprit is indeed a faulty purge valve is this even better to save some money and make it a DIY job? sounds easy enough based on the other threads. but then again im not very "handy" and found replacing my bulbs somewhat difficult :p

again, TIA
