My wife just went and picked up the mail and there was a recall from VW in it. It has to do with the possibility of the right rear tire blowing out under low pressure conditions and the fragments taking out the filler neck and causing a fuel spill. The work will start after 16 June. I guess they are going to insall some sort of shield. Has anyone else gotten this or already have it done?

There are a few threads on this one.

Got it today too. This is just too funny for me at least.

I have a '98 and this is the 1st time I got a recall notice. Something about a possible explosion and having to add a extra protection on the fuel filler neck. I don't know if it is worth taking it to the dealer for this. Probably should.

This recall is if you get a flat and drive it until the tire disintegrates. Then you have problems with this recall.

I can make you a sticker that says you are a dumbass if you want and that will save you the time on this recall. You should never drive a flat until it disintegrates...

You said exactly what I was thinking  But at least they had the guts to send it out and are going to fix it, even if it's kinda goofy. Thanks for the info, I hadn't seen the thread.

So this is no big deal unless u drive a flat down to the rim?
If I get a flat in the hood, I would drive it down to the rim to make sure I was safe before I changed it. It's easier to buy a new rim than a new not_too_shabby,

I also have a '98. Got my 1st recall in today's mail too!
The scary thing is I found out about this issue last year on the web.
I think it was a TSB so I didn't worry about it though 'cause I'm not the kind of dumbass who drives fast on a blown tire, and I hadn't gotten a recall from VW.

Thank you Volkswagon of America. Better late than never!!??

BTW, I plan on having a VW dealership fixing this so that VWofA can pay for it!

This recall will keep all the dealers busy for awhile since the recall includes almost all B5's & B5.5's.

I should call in for an appointment soon before the wait list becomes longer.

I got mine yesterday too. Perhaps if someone gets it done, they can take a pic of what this panel looks like. My guess is it's just a second piece of plastic panel screwed into the fender well over the existing material.

I think the likelihood of the dealer service moron (you think they're going to put a senior guy on these little warranty repairs?) letting a lug nut scratch my rims or lying them face or back side down and getting lip damage is 1,000,000 times greater than the chance that I'd ever drive a flat tire to disintegration.

Oh, lucky post number 777! My tire will not go flat now! If it was 666, I'd of worried.

My thoughts exactly! I'd almost rather put it on myself than let them do it and possibly scratch my wheel in the lugnut holes or something. The dealer has done it before... who says that they won't do it again.

Oh ya.. I got one in the mail too.
