Is there a OEM indash CD changer (single DIN add on)?

. . . or is the trunk mounted version the only one?

I thought I saw a picture of one posted recently but can't find it now. Is there a single DIN unit that can be added (2001.5 B5.5 with Monsoon)? If so, how much does it cost?

I'm inquiring for a friend (I have an aftermarket HU).

Yeah there is one.... you can get it from PG Performance for a whopping $490.

Does anyone know if you can run this plus the factory trunk changer? For a total of 12 cd's. I don't see how you might toggle between the in-dash and the trunk. I currently have a single in-dash and a 6-disc trunk, both factory cd but the trunk is a PITA to get to with a Variant so I end up mostly using the in-dash a doing a lot of loading & unloading. Would like both and prefer the clean factory look over the typical bling bling look that is so common with aftermarket.

Finally, I'm glad to see the OEM-love doesn't exist just in my car!

Unfortuantly, you cannot run the in-dash 6 plus the trunk 6. Only one or the other.

And is it just me, or does it seem like every aftermarket H/U company out there only make H/U's in SILVER these days!? It's so nasty on a B5!

Anyone have the VW part number for that unit so I can give it to my friend? I would think he could do better much better than $490 at Dana, Drew Parts or Liberty.

I don't have the part number, but you could call Paul at PG Performance to find out. Last time I talked to them they had these in stock.

Re: Is there a OEM indash CD changer (nickstewart)

Nick,
It used to bear back in my early mod days (early 80's, Golf 1 and 2's), you could get a very clean looking aftermarket HU from Blaupunkt which was high performance but also a super clean OEM matt black look. Why the onslaught of Japanese looking units in that silver finish? Does the teutonic Euro contingent not have a say anymore or is the aftermarket electronic world ruled by the look of rice?

You're just not lookin' hard enough.

There are plenty of non-silver headunits. Blaupunkt makes some OEM looking ones that'll work nicely w/ VWs, but don't have the quality that some other manufacturers have. Other companies who make nice HUs that aren't silver: Clarion has some funky designs that aren't silver, Kenwood shys away from silver for the most part, Jensen (but I have yet to see a decent HU from them), Alpines switch hit and do both (but they all have that blingin' knob), Nakamichi's are CLEAN as hell (sound and looks)... The only companies that are predominantly silver are...Panasonic (yeah, all of it), JVC's Arsenal line, Sony's higher end, Pioneer's upper end, and some selected few mixed in.

Yes, it's plug and play. Don't have a part number, but I highly doubt Dana can get a better price on it. PGPerformance had to import a bunch of these from Germany to get the price they are at.

Thanks Marty. I'll pass the word but I'm pretty sure my friend will be balking at that price.

Re: Is there a OEM indash CD changer (mnelson)

3 weeks ago I went back to the dealer to have a factory dash CD and 6 disc trunk installed in my 1 y/o car. I spent $900 dollars for both with installation but really wanted the clean factory look so I didn't care. Wish I'd known this was available first. Oh well.

If anyone wants to buy my setup (2 pieces) for what it would cost me to get this indash 6 disc CD, let me know. Or you buy and we swap? I have a Variant and I always have stuff in the back with the cover closed and end up never swapping the discs in the changer.
