A set of clocks destined for a petrol-engine car must’ve come from a petrol engine one; ex-diesel engine clocks can only go only into a diesel engine car due to differences in rev counter.
A set of clocks destined for an estate must've come from an estate; for a saloon must've come from a saloon.
Whichever clocks you buy must already have the odometer set to zero. Or have never been set before. Only then you can do a reset with VCDS. Dealers can't do it on second hand clocks with old odometer readings still there either.

What CAN gateway do you have now? For white clocks you will need revision “F” or above

You will need a different (17) Instruments control module subject to what you have now:
Mine's an '06MY so went from 3C0 920 960 G to 3C0 920 970 PX.
That will give you white clock functionality too

Be aware that the two colours speak different language protocols: Red is DDP, and White is BAP.
If you have an OEM Bluetooth module or headunit then they will have to speak BAP, or they won't be seen in the MFD

The conversion from red to white is possible, but not easy. I went from red mid-line to red high line MFD only.

So I should stick to the MFD+ Red Highline version cluster.

Does the new cluster, when set to 0, automatically pull the mileage from the ECU and reflect that odometer on the instrument panel or will I need to flash the cluster to the ECU and have it read that mileage (I assume by VCDS)

Being that you are in the UK, you are probably running the MPH Speedo. So I need to find the parallel instrument panel for my car where it has KPH on the gauge.

What are the red MFD highline clusters called officially? MFD? MFD+? MFI?

If White is a hassle to go to, I will abandon the idea of putting it in....I want to install the RNS-510 ver. J into my ride. I am assuming, since its OEM it will be able to speak any language that VW once laid out in their cars.

You can go to all white but it's more of a pain than going to just the MFD full height Red. I changed from a half height Red MFD and added a MFSW (Multi-Function Steering Wheel = with buttons) on grounds of cost coz the parts were more expensive in 2010 than now. And so I used a specialist firm that supplied and fitted. White instrument clusters were rare then. Anyways I like the red needles on a blue background colour scheme

MFD = Multi-Function Display -- MFD+ generally indicates greater number of Convenience menu and other options driver settable. MFI = Multi-Function Indicator seems to be generally used when in conversation about tracks or directions or phone book shown on the MFD -- the terms are interchangeable.

 

So then I have the MFA cluster since its the split window.

I need to find a metric speedo with an 8k tach. Full window MFD+ if I can find one.

I am pretty much abandoning the idea of running a 4-spoke MFSW. Just too difficult to track down. I did find a guy on another forum but he removed it from an 07 which was a dual stage airbag so it obviously wouldn't work in my 08' as it is a single stage.
It's either migrating to a 3-spoke MFSW or leaving the 4-spoke non-MFSW and see if I can just change the wiper stalk to have the two additional buttons for manipulating the on screen menu of the MFD+...thing is..I like my 4-spoke because I drive with my hand at the 6 o'clock position on long drives.

You have been a big help so far Richard. Where could I find the appropriate Product number for the MFD+ instrument panel with an 8K Tach and a KPH speedo for my specific year? Is there a technical writeup on a site with a chart or something?
