How to: removing a stripped wheel lock lug bolt

I was getting set up to change the brakes with my bro-in-law as he was removing the wheels. He called me over to the last wheel and told me something I didn't want to hear: the locking lug bolt was stripped out.

Seems I'm not the only one with this problem:

After a few tries of cleaning and hammering on the key, it rounded out completely. Drilling didn't work since I couldn't remove enough material to weaken it sufficiently. Finally called the dealer for suggestions. They said they either drill it out or hammer on a socket around the outside.

Got out a 13/16" impact socket, gave it a few blows with a hammer to force it on the bolt...3 seconds with the impact wrench and the bolt was out!

I'd imagine this would work with standard bolts as well. Since they take 17mm sockets, a 16mm or 15mm will probably do the trick.

I hate that adaptor. I'm going to replace mine with regular bolts. Wheels are so curbed I doubt that they'd ever be stolen. A guy who used to work at our office once had a wheel stolen while visiting a customer. He was such a prick; we still get a chuckle over it.

Try to go to local shop, like "econo Lube" , I don't know if you have it there, but I have friend at work that have the same problem & he took it there, only cost $10 and it's done about 15 minutes.

Ditto on the local shop.

For some reason, all of the lugbolts on one of mine wheels were REALLY tight, which happened to have the stripped lugbolt. I tried the banging-on-a-socket and drilling with no sucess. Local shop put some heat to it, got it out and charged me $15.

Had an incident about two years ago where a B4 front lug bolt had been rounded by the P.O. Had to use a large drill with 1/2 inch bit to drill through the bolt head (use progressively larger bits after making a centered pilot hole). The lug bolts used in 5-lug B4s and B5s are made of softer metal than was used in earlier 4-lug VWs.

After this incident, 75 pound feet of torque is what I run on B4 and B5 lug bolts.
