ye mine is loud too but when i was at the dealer he worned me that it is going to be louder that the v6 just turn the music louder and it goes away it works for me but sometimes if i cant hear it im doing over 100mph which i dont even feel and dont really want to go that fast

sorry I wasn't detiled enough. My passat is 2003 - bought it brand new. Loud from the day 1. I guess this is something I have to get use to.

Well, I will chip it anyway so at least it will be faster

My car was loud as well when it was new. Once teh break in period is through, it will quite down a little. But in Jimmy's situation, the sound he has will just get worse. thats what the norhtern weather will do to a cars underbody.

On your stereo you should have that button that looks like the universal symbol for "dolby surround sound" . Hold that in and "set up" will appear. Put it to 3 and now when you step on the gas, the music will go up and you wont hear a thing....

My variant was loud for the break in period then it tuned down a bit. It's not bad now..

You mean how the turbo spools...

That's the best aspect of the car, you should love that sound!!!

I love turbo sound - psssssssssssss. I rev 3000-3500 rpm because the car is in its breaking stage. A few times I went for a little 4500 rpm. I think the car shoud be more quiet inside while accelerating. I cant explain the laudness but I am sure you guys with 1.8t passats know want I mean.
I hope after brake in period my passe will be quiet (er)

In my experience, the 1.8t is quietest when you're either literally flooring it, or riding really grandmotherly.. (well, the stereotypical grandmother anyhow, my grandmother for one drives her camry like its a vette..)it feels a bit louder, somehow, at heavy, but not full throttle... I don't mind it though, its the ONLY 4 cyl sound I like... it doesn't sound weak like the jap imports do.. and it doesn't give off that ricey buzz I despise in my 98 civic EX...

Mine's loud too from day 1. I actually took my car back to the dealer a week after I got it and told them that something is wrong becuase it sounds loud. I went to pick it up later and the VW dealer told me all is okay, they all sound like that.
Kinda wierd I thought to myself. Wouldn't VW have noticed this during pre-production and did something about it before production of the B5.5 started?
Sometimes mine sounds like the tappits are noisy at low revs. This is the one and only thing I dislike about my 2002 1.8T Passat.

If you think it's loud, try renting a cavalier or ANY GM car for 21 days, you'll find out just how quiet the Passat is once you get your car back. After having to drive those POS while mine was being repaired, my car felt like a dream. Smooth ride and steering, with a whisper quiet engine.

Hey TO Passateer: I just sold my 2000 Passat 1.8T wagon...great car - my new silver wagon just arrive at the dealer yesterday! Anyway - the guy who bought my 2000 was very surprised how quite it was on the highway - he had just test driven a newer Volvo and found it noisy! Mine was always quite as far as I remember...give it a bit and see what happens...hopefully it will chill as with what the others here experienced. As far as the 2nd gear thing is...don't worry - that is just part of the package - in cold weather, 2nd gear "clunks" into place - all the other gears are fine...mine has always been that way until it gets warm (inside or out) ...enjoy the car - it's a wonderful thing! and the chip - well you'll love it!!!
