No. On some models, the coilpacks are screwed down, and you need a Torx to remove them; others just pull off. As far as the torque specs, I doubt it's more fussy than any other car with an aluminum head - but I use a torque wrench, just the same.
How hard is it to scratch your butt? Really, that easy. If you are a first timer at plugs in aluminum heads, get a torque wrench to ensure you are tightening it enough/or not too much. IIRC it was 22ftlbs.
B5.5 should just have the pull out(no bolts) kind. Just pull up gently, with a little force. They should should pop right out. Take it easy and just do one plug at a time.
Also, if you guys want to suggest the best replacement I'd be eager to hear suggestions. I've followed a few of the copper vs platinum vs ngk vs etc etc threads and never really found a consensus here. What say ye?
if you are stock and only feel the need to change every 30-40K, get the PFR6Q. Coppers would be BKR6E if you want to change ~15K miles. NGK only
x2! These 1.8T motors are pretty picky about plugs. I've had PFR6Q for almost 2 changes (I'm close to 110k) with no issues. Also be sure to disconnect the coil pack harness before pulling it out. Be careful not to break the plastic tabs while you are disconnecting the coil packs. I usually only pull one plug/coil pack at a time, but others may pull all of them at the same time.
Only thing is, be careful about the plastic connector plugs. The tabs on them can break easily, I suggest you free up some room by cutting the zip tie so you have wiggle room for the plug, I think they plug them in and then zip tie the wires too tight.
FYI this was stupid simple, thanks all. I'm already getting about 3 MPG bump and better response offline.
Only thing is I can't figure out how to reclip the plastic clips.
The connectors seem fine and snug, not going anywhere, and cyl 1 clip has been long gone, no harm done.
The other three just kind of float in there without 'catching'.
I use those things like some people use duct tape.
