A Tip trans is very heavy. probably 250lbs and heavier on the differential side. Be sure to have a good trans jack and balance the weight between the oil pan and differential.

Relatively easy compared to the auto trans because there is more room to work and a lot less weight.

Tips:
Disconnect the snub mount atthe front of the engine, then you can lift and tilt it for better access to bolts. An engine lift bar helps.

Have an assortment of extensions, up to 24" and a set of swivel sockets.

It will go smoother if you just accept having to remove the exhaust downpipe after disconnecting the axles.

There is a bolt (takes an 8mm allen wrench) holding what I'll call the shifter torsion bar to the right side of the tranny case. Gosh knows why VW made that bolt so long, but it is a pita to get it out working against the heat shield. Get it out and cut about 1/2" or 3/4" off it to make installation easier.

A 16mm, offset, box wrench makes the makes removing the 3 lower housing bolts possible, without dropping the crossmember.

Yes, take both trans mounts out completely.

Loctite blue on all your upper housing bolts (don't ask me how I know)

Remove the clutch slave as a unit, still attached to the hydraulic line. That way you don't have to bleed the clutch when done. The slave is a bit of a pain to reposition though, so pick your poison.

Ditch the inner axle shields. They are such a pain to install..
